The 6.6 x 6.6" Formatt Hitech Ultra Cinema ND Filter 6.6x6.6 4-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Ultra Cinema ND Filter 6.6x6.6 4-Stopuses a rare Earth-mineral coating to create exceedingly neutral NDs. Soft-edge grads are versatile filters used to balance the luminosity of a bright sky with the terrain below. The soft edge makes it easy to place the filter in the scene, especially over undulating horizons (such as mountains). The filters are made from 4mm-thick Schott Superwite glass, and the multicoating is bonded in the middle to increase scratch resistance. Firecrest Filters are neutral across all spectrums, including UV, visible, and infrared.

Firecrest Ultra IRND are carbon-based IRND filters with hyper-neutral color balance which can be used for uniform near infrared filtration allowing your camera's color science to remain untouched. Ultra IRND are equally compatible with ARRI, RED, Blackmagic Design, Canon, Panasonic, and other modern digital cinema cameras allowing the image to be captured as the manufacturer intended.

4mm Cine Firecrest Ultra IRND have the same features of the popular 4mm Cine Firecrest ND. The 4mm Firecrest ND and 4mm Firecrest Ultra IRND both have identical optical performance with the engraving being the only difference.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can it can be used on Nikkor Z 400mm f4.5 & Nikkor Z 70-200mm f2.8 ?

A: To use the PolarPro Helix Variable Neutral Density Filter (6 to 9 Stops) on the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f2.8 you will need to purchase this PolarPro Helix 77mm adapter ring separately. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1767533-REG The Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S Lens has a 95mm filter thread and unfortunately the Helix adapter ring does not go to that size. Maximum they have is 82mm.

Q: 2. The picture they show with this ND filter looks terrible with the filter, is that a mistake or does this filter really do that to your shot?

A: i do not know what you refer to when you say the picture they show with this ND filter looks terrible with the filter, as i did not see any reference picture. all any ND filter does is cut down the light entering the camera lens, just like sunglasses do for our eyes. except this filter knocks down the light by a factor of 10 camera stops. this means that to get the proper exposure for any given aperture, the shutter has to be open for a much longer time to compensate for the filter. in fact, the shutter needs to be open approximately 1,000 times as long. for instance, if without the filter, a correct exposure is metered to be f/8 (or any aperture) at 1/250th a second, then, using the same aperture of f/8, the exposure would need to 4 seconds long. as the filter is neutral, there is no adverse effect on the color of the photograph. the only things that might effect picture quality are any movements that take place during the exposure, or any camera movements. when using this filter, there are few if any times that a tripod shouldn't be used. this filter is usually selected for the purpose of showing the effect of movement during the exposure like clouds or rushing water. it is a specialized and filter and not appropriate for general photography.

Q: 3. Do any or Freewell VND filters have IR filtration? IF so which systems and which wavelengths are filtered? Thanks

A: No, there are no Variable ND filters that are also IR that we are aware of.

Q: 4. Does this have the option to not use any ND, while keeping the filter in the adapter to avoid dust seeping into the hole?

A: You will need to add this clear filter to the drop in filter slot in the Canon EF RF filter adapter. This filter will make sure no dust gets in the camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434115-REG/canon_3444c001_drop_in_clear_filter_a.html

Q: 5. Is this filter stackable? Can the lens cap still fit with this filter on?

A: Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (67mm) has a front threaded diameter to attach 67mm lens caps and filters.

Q: 6. Does this fit on a Canon RF 24-105mm L lens? Without touching the glass?

A: Yes it fits on any lens that has a 77mm filter thread such as the Canon RF 24-105mm f4 L lens.

Q: 7. Can the adjustment knobs be removed?

A: The knobs on the Neewer 2-in-1 Variable ND2-ND32 & CPL Filter (77mm, 1 to 5-Stop) are non-removable.

Q: 8. Why does it say 86mm and 82mm?

A: The rear filter thread is 82mm and the front thread is 86mm.

Q: 9. What is the diameter of the round glass filter in millimeters?

A: The NiSi Cinema True Color 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter for C5 Matte Box can be used with 95mm cinema lenses and lenses with filter threads up to 82mm.

Q: 10. What can I use for a front cap for this? I've tried 86mm lens caps and they do not work.

A: You could use an 86mm push-on lens cap that doesn't have threads for the Genustech 82mm Variable Neutral Density and Circular Polarizer Filter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/157564-REG/Schneider_91_030386_86mm_Push_On_Lens_Cap.html

[Glass] Yes these cost a bit more than other brands but you do get what you pay for. You don't get the color shifts that come with Tiffens, and to some degree Schneiders. The DPs and DITs I work with still are requesting these on every shoot so it was time for me to buy a set of my own. Super happy with them.

[1.03 lb] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected.

[1.03 lb] I was really pleased with the images that I have been able to create with this filter. As soon as I got it I took it to the coast and tried a bunch of long exposure shots at sunset. When I got the images onto my PC I was very happy to see that I could not tell which images I had used the filter on by looking at the colors. The colors were identical with and without the filter!

[Glass] I put these firecrest NDs head to head with PolarPros NDs and these are slightly more sharp and higher quality than polar pros. Just holding these in your hand you can feel the quality of the build. Theyre a breeze taking them on and off of the lens as well. Worth the top dollar they are.

[Multi Coated] I am a newbie to ND photography and while researching ND filters so many photographers I respected recommended the Firecrest Ultra...and I am very glad I listened to them. I plan on buying the less dense ones too.

[Multi Coated] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired.

I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse.
