The 1.5 to 9-stop, 58mm Hoya Variable Density II ND Filter 58mm 1.5-9 Stopminimizes the vignette effect often experienced when shooting with wide-angle lenses. In this updated version, Hoya improved the frame of the predecessor Variable Density filter, making it thinner for better handling of vignetting. The filter features a dedicated knob for precision rotation between an adjustable neutral density range of 1.5 to 9-stops). It also allows you to attach an optional lens cap. It supports lens caps that are one size larger than the filter size.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it a 0.45 to 1.5 or 1.5 to 5 filter?Are these two different versions?

A: For whatever reason, we are changing over the nomenclature delineating what strength an ND filter is. Therefore this name lists both. Old way: This is a variable 0.45-1.5 Neutral Density filter. New way: this reduces exposure by 1.5 to 5 Stops.

Q: 2. Does this have IR filtration built in? Because I plan on using it with a BMPCC 6K and don't want IR pollution changing the colors as I step down.

A: The PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Edition Variable Neutral Density filter is made of Quartz Glass. Quartz Glass has excetionally high tramissision of the entire visible spectrum inclding UV and IR. If you need UV filtration use a seperate UV filter.

Q: 3. Is there a setting with no density: i.e., a completely clear setting?

A: The lowest density on that filter is 2 stop reduction of light.

Q: 4. Hi Does it cuts Infrared rays too?

A: Unfortunately this filter does not cut infrared.

Q: 5. Does the NiSi 77mm Variable ND 1.5 to 5 filter stop have a HARD STOP?

A: Yes, the NiSi 77mm Variable Neutral Density 0.45 to 1.5 Filter (1.5 to 5-Stop) has hard stops.

Q: 6. Does this Variable ND Filter suffer from color cast? How much color correction is needed in post if any? Compared to no ND filter what is the color temperature? Thanks

A: These Polarpro filters are very good and have little or no color cast to speak of.

Q: 7. Is this newest version? Version 2?

A: No this is the mark I.

Q: 8. I ordered this and have noticed that the lens cap of none of my 77mm lenses does not fit. Is there a cap that can fit over this filter?

A: This 90mm push-on lens cap will work for this filter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/125305-REG/Kaiser_206990_90mm_Push_On_Lens_Cap.html

Q: 9. do the filter eliminate IR pollution?

A: No, that filter does not reduce IR pollution. It is a Variable Neutral Density filter. The filter only reduces the amount of all light getting through.

Q: 10. Does the side lever interfere with a lens hood and if so, can it be removed from the filter?

A: A standard snap on hood Especially because the front is stepped up to avoid vignette) may not work with this filter but most threaded 82mm hoods should work with it.

[0.28 lb] I'm a big fan of Tiffen filters. Sure, I could buy more expensive ones. But, so far, I see nothing in other brands that my Tiffen filters couldn't provide.

[0.28 lb] Nice touch! Very smooth between each level of ND, doesn't have the vignetting issue like with some of the cheaper ones.

[0.28 lb] What a difference this has made in one day. I had been using a three lens ND kit for all of my photos. Now I am starting to get into video and while on the gimbal, every change to the ND stack, would force a rebalance of the camera. With the variable ND, the weight never changes, so I get more time to shoot. Plus it is so much faster to just twist the ring. It was so worth it.

[0.28 lb] Needed a good ND for my Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF that would not break the bank. This was it.
