    Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Where is this light meter manufactured? Thank you.

A: Currently this meter is manufactured in the PHILIPPINES.

Q: 2. Just got the Sekonic L-308X-U delivered. I am following the instructions to use Cordless Flash Mode. I press the Measure button and the Cordless Flash icon blinks. I am triggering a Profoto B10 from the white button on the back, aimed right at the Lumisphere. No change in F reading at all. I've tried all ISOs and shutter speeds. I have full batteries on everything. Is it faulty or am I missing something or is this not compatible with the Profoto B10?

A: When the Sekonic L-308X-U is in Cordless Flash metering mode, once you press the meter button and the flash symbol on the light meter begins to blink, you have 90 seconds to take your light meter reading. The ISO and the shutter speed should be set to the ISO/shutter speed you plan to use for your image. Instead of pressing the [TEST] button on the rear of the Profoto B10 strobe, you should trigger the flash normally by pressing the shutter button on your camera connected to a Profoto AirTTL remote trigger so the flash fires as the full preset output power, as the [TEST] button will not always fire the flash at full power. Make sure the Profoto B10 is set to [Manual] flash output, not [TTL] output, as the Sekonic L-308X U does not read TTL flash output. If you do the above and you are still having issues with your light meter, you may contact Sekonic directly by e-mailing them at support@sekonic.com or by calling them at 914-347-3302. If you feel your light meter is not working properly and it was purchased within the last 30 days, you may contact Customer Service to return the light meter for an exchange or a refund. But first, I would recommend trying the above, then contacting Sekonic for troubleshooting to ensure the light meter is working properly.

Q: 3. I'm trying to take simplified illuminance reading, followed the steps in the guide, using lumidisk but nothing happens in all custom modes. Seknoic helpdesk solution is restart! any help?

A: If you have followed the directions listed inside the instruction manual, but the light meter is not responding correctly, then there may be a defect with the light meter and/or it may require warranty inspection/repair. If the light meter was purchased within the last 30 days, you may contact our Customer Service Department to inquire about returning the light meter for an exchange or a refund. If it has been over 30 days since you purchased the light meter, you would have to contact Sekonic directly. As Sekonic has recently been having issues with their website, if you are having issues with contacting Sekonic online, you may contact them directly by calling them at 914-347-3300, or you may e-mail them at info@sekonic.com.

Q: 4. What is the f-stop range? Will it measure to f64?

A: The following unit offers a f-stop range of 0.5-90

Q: 5. This meter is used for both incident and reflected light metering purposes. I know that all handheld light meters measure incident light, but I don't understand why this meter is needed for reflected light measurements. The camera's built-in light meter is much quicker and easier to use for a reflected reading. What is the purpose of taking a reflected reading from a handheld light meter?

A: Light meters were designed long before there were meters in any cameras; since some people still like to use a hand-held meter, there was no reason to remove a capability that was already built in.

Q: 6. I keep getting the same aperture reading with different flash power settings. What could be causing this?

A: The flash power can be controlled in increments from the transmitter in manual mode as well.

    Q: 7. Can I calibrate the meter?

A: No, the Sekonic Illuminometer i-346 Light Meter does not have a self-calibration option.. You would have to send the meter to Sekonic for calibration needs.

Q: 8. Does it come with the lumidisc?

A: The lumidisc comes with the device, if you need to purchase a replacement, it would be this one: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/119344-REG/Sekonic_401_830.html

Q: 9. How often should the Sekonic I-346 be sent in for calibration to Sekonic?

A: The I-346 is calibrated in the factory, so it doesn't need to be sent in for calibration on a regular basis.

Q: 10. Does this meter tell you light temperature as well? i.e. 3200, 5600, etc

A: No, the Sekonic L-308X-U Flashmate Light Meter is not a color meter and does not measure the light Kelvin temperature output. If you are trying to measure color temperature, I would recommend the Sekonic C-700-U SpectroMaster Color Meter, B&H # SEC700U, the Kenko KCM-3100 Professional Color Temperature Meter, B&H # KECM3100, or the Illuminati Instrument Light and Color Meter, B&H # ILIM100, for your usage needs.

[Padded Interior] Before buying the 858 I used and still own 2 Pentax Digital Spotmeters. Love them but not the fact there’s literally only one person in the US that can calibrate them and he’s not the friendliest person made me look for another option. I bought the 858 to be my main meter. Wanted a new meter, and frankly with the prices or used ones on eBay (even more for us sellers, go figure) it made sense just to buy this one.

There is a learning curve (especially coming from years with the Pentax). So far I have been able to do everything I want and more. Yes there is a little lag turning it on. I found if you leave stuff in the memory it slows down boot time. Got use to the touch screen. Not sure why everyone acts like it’s a deal breaker. I had smart phones in the past with worse screens. The spot meter (I use the most as a landscape photographer) has a smaller viewfinder then the Pentax, and has difficulty on closer subjects while the Pentax has no issues. Another coming complaint I see is about the lack of buttons vs the 758. Honestly if you want a bunch of buttons, get a used 758. Problem solved.

As for the screen, everything is labeled, no more using code like “3-0.0-1.3” and figuring out which number means what in the settings. After handling it a bit, dialing in profiles, it’s a pretty fast workflow now.

[Padded Interior] I’ve never used a flashmeter before but it worked as I expected. Very easy to use and gave accurate flash exposures. B&H delivered on time.

[0.14 lb] If you want to get your exposure down, this is the product. And B&H has good prices and a great inventory.

[Zipper] We have been using Sekonic meters for over 30 years. The Sekonic L-858D-U gives the maximum amount of flexibility while using Elinchrom lights and also when doing Macro photography using the Skyport Receiver Plus to trigger our Nikon Z9 camera while using ringlights.

[Zipper] I'm using a light meter more these days in my gaffing work and the Godox trigger works great with my still photography equipment.

[Zipper] Great meter. I purchased it because I wanted a Spot Meter. This fits the bill nicely. It also has a setting for the meter to choose the ISO, rather than the f/stop or the aperture. Nice to lock in those and have the meter choose the ISO. I do not use the Cine features. Expensive, but great.
