Q: 1. Does this use PoE (Power over Ethernet) to power the far side? Or is the power adapter on the far side only? Or two adapters? More generally: How does each device get power? (And how much power can be supplied to plugged in devices?)

A: The IOGEAR USB 2.0 4-Port BoostLinq Ethernet Kit has a power adapter for the receiver. The device is USB 2.0 and delivers 500mA @ 5vdc.

Q: 10. Is this an Ethernet extender or just a Cat5/6 Extender? HUGE difference between just retransmitting across CAT5 wiring and actually converting to Ethernet Frames, Only the latter would allow you to use with switches or other L2 devices in between, which is the scenario I'm trying to use it for. Not looking to run a dedicated line.

A: For what I bought it for and I believe what its designed for, is to just extend and transmit USB protocol past the recommend 6 feet. In my tests I was able to extend up to 150 ft. This is a P2P device.

[0.575 lb] all pros: predictable switching between systems, long term reliability, outgrew some of my 2x4 switches and did not think twice about getting the 4x4 switch, it was an automatic decision.

[0.575 lb] Easy to setup and it's doing its job well. I like the two little green lights at the top to indicate to which output (right or left) your inputs (mouse and keyboard in my case) are going to.

[0.575 lb] With COVID-19 upon us, like many people in software engineering I'm now working from home. My home has a fantastic PC with a mechanical keyboard, mouse and larger monitor which I wanted to use with my Macbook Pro. Additionally, in the future I might have a gaming rig and a few dedicated Linux boxes, and this device delivered on all fronts.

The little separate button is fantastic, I was able to drop the actual USB switch below my desk and only be left with the little button on my desk. You do have to round robin between the inputs, so having a good mental memory of what input number you're on and which input number you're trying to get to is important.

While a KVM can theoretically provide a little bit more of an integrated solution between devices AND video, the framerate limits of KVMs coupled with some uncertainty regarding their ability to work with adaptive vsync specifications (gsync or freesync) left me a little leery of making what would be a more substantial investment. In the end, this solution works fantastically well and obviously won't ever present framerate limitations or introduce video latency.
