Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How much reduction in UV and IR spectrum, respectively, is specified? I understand the reduction in visible light is 16.5 stops.

A: Unfortunately, Nisi does not specify how much of the IR and UV is reduced for NiSi Solar Filter Pro Nano UV/IR Cut ND100000 Filter (77mm, 16.5-Stop). They do state that the UV and IR cut is to offer a color neutral result. Therefore the UV and IR cut should not be relied upon for anything else other than offering an image that is color neutral.

Q: 2. If this filter is NOT safe for direct eye viewing, why should I believe it IS safe for a camera's sensor? Please convince me.

A: The NiSi Solar Filter Pro Nano UV/IR Cut ND100000 Filter (16.5-Stop) is safe for camera sensors when used carefully and following the instructions. The sensitivities of eyes and sensors are different and what is good for one may not be good for the other. This filter has been used on cameras without causing any sensor damage.

Q: 3. Is this filter compliant with ISO 12312-2 (the international safety standard for filters for direct viewing of the Sun)?

A: ISO 12312-2:2015 is the standard for direct viewing of the sun; the NiSi Solar Filter Pro Nano UV/IR Cut ND100000 Filter (77mm, 16.5-Stop) specifically states that "This filter is not appropriate for direct solar observation with the naked eye, and should exclusively be used for photographic purposes." This filter is not rated for direct viewing of the sun.

Q: 4. Could this be used for video? We are hoping to use a Canon XF105 to livestream the upcoming solar eclipse.

A: Yes, the NiSi Solar Filter Pro Nano UV/IR Cut ND100000 Filter can be used for video as well as photography.

Q: 5. Can I use this with the nikon Z 24-70 F4? The nikon website lists diameter as 77.5.

A: The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens has a filter thread of 72mm. If you want to attach the filter directly to the lens with an adapter, you would want to get his option instead: https://bit.ly/3ujiIec

Q: 6. What order should this go on the lens? Before or after mist filter?

A: I recommend placing the NiSi 82mm UV IR-Cut Filter for True Color VND and Swift System first, since it is the clearest filter, and stacking the mist filter after.

Q: 7. Is this the Pro 2 version? The picture shows Pro 2, but the description doesn't. THanks

A: Yes. The Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror Magnetic Clip-in Filter for Sony E-Mount Full-Frame Cameras is the newer Pro 2 version.

Q: 8. Is this the filter to use for Leica M8 to not get purple blacks? In other words the same as what Leica supplied for M8 buyers?

A: The B+W UV-IR Cut #486 MRC Basic Filter (49mm) blocks 88% of ultraviolet light waves and 95% of infrared light waves.

Q: 9. does this filter help in astrophotography if the camera is not modified?

A: The Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut H-Alpha Pass Magnetic Clip-in Filter is not recommended for use in an unmodified camera.

Q: 10. Will this filter help astrophotography in an unmodified Z9?

A: If the Nikon Z9 is not modified it won't help much for astrophotography. I wouldn't recommend it.

[0.155 lb] I got this filter because my results on my Canon 400mm 5.6 with a Hoya HMC 77 UV(O) were drab. With this new filter I have brilliant color and contrast and can enjoy vivid pictures. I am happy with this purchase.

[0.155 lb] I use it for blocking UV/IR (duh) and as a dust cap, this is a very well made filter with a solid feel. I've used Hoya filters for over 35 years and they have always had robust coatings that seem to last forever. The frames are made of a hi grade aluminum with precision threads. A great product at a great price too, I love it!

[0.155 lb] This IR CUT filter from HOYA is a great piece of gear to insure you don't get the red bleed into your blacks when using your ND filter.... and let me say, it WORKS SPECTACULARLY!!! Working with the BlackMagic line of cameras, you run into the dreaded Red Bleed on any daylight footage with blacks in it. It can destroy your footage... but this IR CUT filter solves the issue PERFECTLY in camera guaranteeing you get the image you want and don't have nightmares to deal with in post. If you are using BlackMagic Cameras... or any other brands for that matter, make this a part of your kit. HIGHLT Recommend!!!

[0.155 lb] Less expensive then Hoya, but do the same job. Blackmagic Pocket 6k mostly suffers ir pollution. Ice ir cut eliminate it. On hard ND stops gives little green tint, that can be changed in postproduction.

[0.155 lb] The BMPCC 4k can have it's colours muted a bit due to NIR spill, and while this is can be super obvious when using lower cost ND filters, this filter helps the green of vegetation pop a little better even when used without an ND filter (see Red Edge on plants, which starts ~700nm) . Yes, if you use a very wide angle lens, things may get a little weird on the edges with a filter like this, but I've not had any problems. It appears to be well made, and while it is a bit pricey, especially at a larger size, having a single larger filter means I can use step rings to make it work and not have to buy multiple filters.

[0.155 lb] Sunrise and sunset photography are one of my favorite areas, but I often shoot shorebirds as well. When there is chop in the seas or ponds the water came out looking like astroturf. It is possible to continue attenuating IR interference with this filter so chop resolves into the small waves that it is, rather than a strange patch of foreground. My 3yro filter met its demise defending the primary last night so another will be on order promptly.

[0.155 lb] If you have a BMPCC 4K camera, you will need a UV and IR cut filter, the 77mm fits, but the 82mm does not.

[0.155 lb] This filter has greatly enhanced my photos of the night sky. I use a Canon EOS 6D Mark II that has a full spectrum modification and this filter helps reduce the red spectrum which makes the picture look more natural.
