The 16mm f/2.0 ED AS UMC CS Lens for Canon EF-S Mount from Rokinon is a manual focus wide-angle lens compatible with APS-C format DSLR digital cameras. It provides a 79.5° angle of view which translates into a 35mm format equivalency of 25.6mm. A fast maximum aperture of f/2.0 is effective in low light shooting and provides shallow depth of field. With two aspherical lens elements and one extra-low dispersion element, chromatic aberrations are minimized and sharp, color-accurate images are the result. UMC lens coating facilitates even light transmission and reduces ghosting and flare.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Anyone use this for astrophotography? constellations and star trails are my goal.

A: Yes. That is what I purchased this lens for. However, be aware that in addition to being manual focus, it also has a manual aperture, and there are no contacts on the lens to transfer anything from the lens to the camera. So focusing the lens with small apertures can be difficult. I missed this fact when I ordered it, but since I bought it primarily for astrophotography, and use it at f2 it is not a huge problem. I believe these functions do work on Nikons. It is well built and seems to work well. Only had two chances to try it since I got it.Ralph Pokorny

Q: 2. Looks obvious but Id rather to ask than make a mistake: Does it mount on Full Frame camera? (Nikon D750) Thank you!

A: It mounts and it works, but because it is designed for the smaller DX-sensor cameras, it will vignette -- a lot -- in FX mode. If you shoot your D750 in DX mode, it will work just fine, but all things being equal, you would be better off using a 24 mm f/2.8 (or faster) lens in FX mode.

Q: 3. Is it possible to use it with a Canon T3i with a clipin Halpha filter, such as an Astronomik filter?

A: We do not carry the Astronomik line of filters so we cannot speak to the efficacy of such a combination. Please contact Astronomik. We can offer the opinion that this lens will behave the same as a Canon lens as far as mounting is concerned.

Q: 4. hello! does this lens cover APSH sensor like the 1dxii 4k 1.4 crop?

A: No, sorry it will not work perfectly. In fact, it would not work without severe vignetting. We are also of the opinion that it will not even mount on the camera since EF-S lenses are blocked from mounting on an EF mount cameras.

Q: 5. How is does this lens perform in video mode? Looking for a budget option to the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 because I don't have a mirrorless camera.

A: This is a great choice when compared with the Sigma, but with two potential disadvantages. Its aperture is a little smaller than the Sigma's f/1.4, and this lens is manual-focus only, whereas the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 has autofocus capabilities.

Q: 6. Can I use a diffusion filter with this lens?

A: You can use any 77mm sized filter on this lens.

Q: 7. I own this lens. Has anyone ever tried it on a FF body? The reason I ask, is that it connects to the 7D at the red dot, not the white square. It takes great shots for astrophotography, no coma to my eye at all. I focus using live view, magnified, mirror lock up, and at ISO 1600, +1.5 EV, works great at new moon. Remote shutter release a must.

A: This is an Canon EF-S lens, which means it is for cropped sensor cameras. It will not work with Canon Full Frame Cameras that have a EF mount. They are not compatible.

Q: 8. Hello! Does it work perfectly on an APSH 1.4 crop sensor suck the 1DXii 4k mode?

A: No, sorry it will not work perfectly. In fact, it would not work without severe vignetting. We are also of the opinion that it will not even mount on the camera since EF-S lenses are blocked from mounting on an EF mount cameras.

Q: 9. will it work on my sony a7?

A: This lens is designed for use on APS-C format sensor cameras, so it would only be compatible on the A7 and other full frame E mount cameras when used in crop mode.

Q: 10. I see this lens is made for APS-C sensors so why does it say 25.6mm in 35mm format. I would think that since it is designed for a smaller sensor you would not have to multiply the 1.6. In other words if I use this on my Canon 7d is it 16mm or 25.6?

A: Manufacturers almost always state a lens focal length at 35mm. So, it's in reality 25.6mm on a 1.6 crop sensor. I'm using it on the 7D as well. Unfortunately, due to the totally manual properties of the lens, the camera shows no info on what the actual focal length is...Doesn't show any info AT ALL, at least not on my 7D body. Takes beautiful astronomical shots tho, extremely low to no coma.

[77 mm (Front)] I bought this lens because of its wide aperture and short focal length. I needed a versatile wide-angle lens that wouldn't break the budget, and this was definitely the right lens for me. I haven't used it for any landscape photography yet, but it seems to perform well for astrophotography.

[77 mm (Front)] I purchased this lens specifically for astro-photography. I wanted to photograph the Milky Way from my estate near Mammoth Lakes, CA where there is plenty of dark sky. I used a Nikon D7100 and the results exceeded my expectations. An outstanding lens! I also tried it on landscapes and achieved similar, outstanding results. It is now one of my favorite lenses.

[79.5°] I purchased this lens for landscape photography with my Sony A6000 primarily. For my first manual lens, it was easy to get accustomed to. The focus ring is smooth, the aperture ring is stout, and the overall build quality feels really great. The best part of the lens is definitely the image quality. For the price, can you get any sharper? I also use this lens for action shots in mountain biking and it does really well for that as well.

[77 mm (Front)] Lens is very sharp. Manual focus, with focus and exposure information sent to the camera.

[1.62 lb] I purchased this lens for some basic nighttime shooting....Milky Way and the like. The build quality seems good and I haven't noticed any significant vignetting. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

[77 mm (Front)] I have a Cannon T Rebel 5 and this is the only 16mm lens that fits this and works without a really expensive adapter. I am an architectural photographer so it is imperative that I have one of these.

[APS-C] I have the Canon 35mm f/2 IS lens which is great and takes great sharp pictures. On the first picture I took with this Samyang/Rokinon 16mm f/2 lens, I was seriously blown away. I've heard that they generally make sharp, manual focus lenses, but I didn't know they'd be this sharp. The lens has a little bit of distortion but nothing serious. It has a T-stop value of about 2.5 and has a bit of a vignette until around f/4. Honestly it's sharp wide open but once you stop down to f/4, it's crazy. It made me want to get a higher megapixel camera since mine is the 18MP t5i. Can't go wrong with Rokinon lenses, and I really want to get the 85mm one. 5/5

[f/2] I am an amateur Astrophotographer and am using this lens with both my Nikon D200 and Canon EOS T3i cameras for wide angle sky images. It is performing just as I was led to believe it would. Thus far I have not found any negative aspects.

[f/2] The lens seems to be built well, infinity focus at the line (l) to the left of infinity. Very slight vignetting and slight distortion at the corners, but well within respectable tolerances. The submitted shot was taken in Bortel Scale 5 skies with a full moon at 45-50 degrees. Canon 7D II, ISO 400 2 sec., lens 16mm f/2 wide open with Hoya Pro 1 Digital protector in place (tripod). Very happy with this lens...a Great buy... Focus ring works great as does the stop ring, stops at 2.0 2.4, 2.8 etc.

[APS-C] Purchased this lens for landscape and astrophotography. My initial impression is that the lens is well made and very sharp even at f2.0. Did not see any indication of decentering but will do more testing based concerns in other reviews. Lens accommodated 77 mm polarizing filter, though the hood did not have an opening to turn the filter from the side. However, filter can be turned from the front of the hood. Large focusing ring worked quite well and was tack sharp when using live view. Lens coupled with Pentax K-3 so that one can change aperture from the camera in AV mode. Overall, quite happy with this lens.
