The 40.5mm Urth Soft Graduated ND8 Lens Filter 40.5mmfrom Urth Soft Graduated ND8 Lens Filter 40.5mmprovides a fixed 3 f-stop light reduction from half your image for balanced exposure and better dynamic range in soft graduated light conditions. By blocking 3 f-stops of light from half the image, you can balance your exposure when the foreground is darker than the background - such as shooting landscapes in the mountains. The soft graduation creates a natural blending of light. The Plus+ range features 20-layers of nano-coating providing easier cleaning and better protection against water, oil, and scratches. These layers also provide a higher maximum light transmission and a more consistent transmission curve for truer light reduction.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Many variable neutral density filters either cause a color shift at darker settings or the dreaded "X-effect" on wide angle lenses. Does this filter suffer from those issues?

A: Any variable ND over 6-7 stops can create the X-effect. And that is the deign and physics of a variable ND filter. And it depends on the lens you are using and the light you are shooting under. As for the color shift almost all have some color shift including the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (77mm). These are higher models of filters, https://bhpho.to/3TSB4JH

Q: 2. What size is the outside thread for a cap?

A: The front of this filter has a 46mm thread as well as the rear threads.

Q: 3. What is the glass used/origin and is it multicoated?

A: The Urth 77mm UV Lens Filter (Plus+) is made with SCHOTT glass and is multicoated.

Q: 4. Will the lens cap attach to this filter

A: Yes, the Urth 77mm UV Lens Filter offers a double-threaded design that allows filters to be stacked and lens caps to be used.

Q: 5. Is this filter coated?

A: According to the manufacturer, the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (58mm) features an 8-layer nano coating.

Q: 6. Does this filter have hard stops at the ends?

A: Yes, the Urth 58mm ND2-32 (1-5 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter would have hard stops at the ends.

Q: 7. I think I have seen some VND's have a total size larger than its threading part, which ends up blocking the ability to mount a lens hood. Does the size of this filter prevent the mounting of a lens hood?

A: Most Variable ND filters have a larger outer diameter than the thread in size. Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (58mm) has a front and mount thread of 58mm. However, the outer diameter of this filter is 62mm therefore if your lens hood is not wide enough it may not fit with this filter mounted on your lens.

Q: 8. I bought this VND for my sigma 16mm 1.4 lens , will it work with this lens??

A: Yes, the 67mm Urth N2-400 Variable ND filter will work with your Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens. Due to the design of the filter front ring and the mounting style of your Sigma's bayonet hood, there might be some interference if you try to use the filter and lens hood at the same time.

Q: 9. Does it have hard stops?

A: The Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (82mm) features smooth twist adjustments rather than hard stops for each stop. This allows for seamless and precise control over the amount of light reduction. The filter can be easily adjusted to achieve the desired exposure without any abrupt changes or limitations.

Q: 10. Is this antireflection-coated?

A: The manufacturer states that this filter has an 8 layer nano coating.

[Glass] This is a big, heavy, tough filter. I think this will be the last ND filter I will ever buy. Kinda surprised how thick 4mm is. Wouldn't shock me if it was bullet proof. Glad I went with the glass filter, I had plastic filters ,they are cheap, but scratches too easily.

[Glass] I've been a fan of Urth products for a couple of years. I wanted a Grad ND filter and this one fit the bill. It works well and the soft edge makes it very useful. Also, having it be able to turn so that the ND part can be moved from top to bottom and everywhere in between is a big plus.

[40.5 mm] I take a lot of landscape pictures. Lately I have been taking ocean view pictures in the evening and had big contrast issues - bright sky and dark foreground. I had the camera checked out and everything was to spec. HDR mode and Software couldn't correct the problem so I tried the Tiffen Graduated ND filter which solved the problem perfectly. Pictures are much better balanced.

[Multi Coated] I have been using a cheaper filter set and now I see the difference between cheap and quality.

I always had a color cast with the cheaper set and I don’t see that issue with this set.

[40.5 mm] Thank You for your excellent service. The ND filter arrived and was to be a gift, so use hasn't occurred yet. I just like B&H- rather than some of the other vendors. Sincerely, C.

[4.5 x 4 x 0.9"] Trying URTH filter for the first time. Normally use B+W filters, but they are getting way too expensive. I like that URTH packaging is completely recyclable and they have a tree planting initiative when you purchase any of their products. Using the filter on a Nikon zoom 24-120mm lens. So far too good!

[Glass] I use these filters constantly. They are great. No vignetting on my 20mm or my 16-35mm lens. They fit snugly into the holder. Pricey but really useful.
