Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can two separate RAID Arrays be created within this device, ie one Array using the SSD's and a separate RAID array using the HDD's for backing up the first?

A: Yes, it is possible to run multiple RAID volumes on the OWC Thunderbay. However, these volumes would be spread out between multiple parts of all disks, and not confined to certain disks only - all disks would be part of all volumes present on the array.

Q: 2. What brand and model of SSDs and HDDs are used in this pre-configured version for OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 100TB 8-Bay 7x14TB HDDs?

A: Unfortunately we do not know which drives any given OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 100TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (1 x 2TB SSD, 7 x 14TB HDDs) will ship with, as they use different drives throughout the lifetime of the RAID Array.

Q: 3. Can we purchase extra drives (same model) for hot swappable spares? Link?

A: Sure, you could get spare drives to swap into the OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 144TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (8 x 18TB HDDs), but depending on your RAID setup you may have issues swapping in a fresh drive with a drive that has critical data on it, so it really depends on how you manage your data.

Q: 4. hello, is this harddrive 144tb include? if yes, harddrive 18tb*8?

A: Yes, included with this OWC Thunderbay Flex 8 system would be the eight 18TB hard drives.

Q: 5. what it the acoustic noise leavels?

A: The manufacturer does not specify the noise level of this RAID array.

Q: 6. What's the rebuild time if you lose an 18TB disk in the 144TB RAID-5?

A: There is not an official spec on rebuild time under these circumstances, but it should be possible to complete the rebuild of a single 18TB disk overnight.

Q: 7. Will this work with new M1 Mac Processors?

A: Yes, thee OWC Thunderbay Flex 8 will work with M1 Mac computers.

Q: 8. Can 3 or 4 people use it simultaneously by connecting to different ports?

A: The OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 160TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (8 x 20TB HDDs) BH #OWCTB3F8H160 can only be connected to one host machine.

Q: 9. got any specific hard drive can used in this?? or can put any brand of hard drive??

A: You can use any brand of 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drive in the OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 64TB 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (8 x 8TB HDDs).

Q: 10. What are people putting in the PCIe slot?

A: The OWC ThunderBay Flex can add a 4K video capture card for direct ingest of multi-stream high-res footage. Record high-quality tracks with an audio card and then edit and archive tracks via the PCIe x16 slot.

[30 TB] Easy setup and rock solid piece of gear as always from OWC. Huge increase to size and speed for my editing suite. Very happy with my purchase

[1 x 450 W] Using as a RAID 1+0 with SoftRaid as a backup for footage, and have no complaints. Fan isn't loud enough to even notice under my desk. Throughput with Thunderbolt allows me to attach other arrays, or even spindle drives, when my other ports are being used. You can also mount or eject drives that are in front of the chain, which allows me to keep this attached while removing edit or footage drives.

[Aluminum] There are cheaper enclosures out there, most notably USB based ones, but the Thunderbay units are well worth the extra cost. The drives show up as direct access storage devices, and are hot swappable. The performance is great, and there's enough power delivery to handle eight high density drives.

I use ZFS with these units, and have two daisy chained together. When hooked up to a NUC, a high performance NAS with good performance and expandability is achieved without headache.

[1 x 450 W] Works great, incredibly fast supports ssd trim with no Linux or Windows modifications. Really great product all around. Only thing I can't figure out is that it says it'll provide 85W of charging power but I can't seem to get it to charge a 65W laptop at all.

[30 TB] Im buying as soon as they become available a Mac Studio Ultra but I wanted to be ready with the storage. Today I still use a Mac Pro 11 years old with internal disks. It's a fast machine but after seeing what my Macbook Air can do with video compression I decided that is time to switch. My main concern was the noise, I do have an older SATA box from OWC that I use for backup but I shut it down when is not in use due to the noise. Well, this new Thunderbay 8 is just whispering. A very well designed product, the fan probably has variable speed and my WD HDD don't make too much noise even though they are enterprise specs. One of the RAID is 3 14TB in RAID zero configuration (soft ) and I get about 750/800 MB/s , faster than when I had them installed in my old Mac Pro since SATA there was just 3Gbps . Silent fast, not too expensive . Nothing beat this. Also, everything was plug & play. I just moved my HDD from my Mac Pro to this box and they appeared on my Mac Air when I plugged the TB cable in. My only complain is the black color, it's nice but why black? This should have been the same color like the Macs are. At least the mainstream silver. Second minor complain the cable in the box is very short. Buy a longer cable when you buy the box unless your connected device is really next to this box.

[Aluminum] I shoot a lot and currently my archive of still images is like 36TB deep without backups. I've been using DROBO and JBOD as a solution but it was not very well organized. My DROBO gave up the ghost and I decided on a RAID 5 solution. After a lot of research I ended up with the OWC enclosure and 7 NAS 12TB drives (I'm using the 8th slot as a Time Machine and not part of the RAID 5). It's a well crafted enclosure, the software is easier to use than I feared (a few good YouTube videos out there on setting it up that helped) and the install went fine on my Mac Studio Pro M1 that is my main computer. A few things, yes you are aware of the enclosure noise but its less than the fans on the PROBOX JBOD's I had been using and if you have any background music on at all, you don't hear it and mine is on the desktop next to me. The other nice thing is that it's as fast as anything I've used working with files in Photoshop and Capture 23, no lag once the drives spin up for the first time in the morning. I've overall very happy with this solution.

[30 TB] I have a Thunderbay 4 and now a Thunderbay 8 and I find them simple to setup, quiet and easy to use (though I think the level of noise is somewhat dependent on the drives you purchase). I put 8 x 22TB Seagate Ironwolf HDs in a RAID 5 configuration and after spending some time certifying every drive through SoftRAID, it has worked without a hitch. I'm using this to replace a Drobo 8D and it is quieter and takes up less real estate. This is a solid purchase if you need a lot of storage space for photos and video, and at 600MB/s write and 1000MBs read, you can work directly with 4K video files.

[30 TB] I have used a Promise Pegasus for years on a succession of iMac, beginning 10 years ago. Though not as fast as I had hoped that solution worked for general backup and backing up my library of photography, over 20,000 frames. But when I moved to a higher resolution camera, and Mac Studio, I needed a new solution. After much research I chose a ThunderBay Mini with four SSD drives in RAID 4 configuration. So far, it is working great, with amazing speed for my entire Lightroom Classic photo library. It was the right choice!
