Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would this mic work well for Podcasting, Virtual Meetings, Speech Videos? If not, would you recommend the Shure Sm57 or Sm7b?

A: Yes and Maybe. As a podium mic, which requires 48V phantom power, this mic MAY be a good choice, providing that it is connected to a device providing 48V phantom power, an audio interface or an audio mixer (with USB out) would be required to connect this mic to a computer. Examples include: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1479273-REG/focusrite_scarlett_solo_3g_scarlett_solo_usb_audio.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1251143-REG/shure_mvi_a_ltg_mvi_digital_audio.html/specs The Shure SM57 or SM7B are good choices, though are less sensitive mics, so require very close proximity (3-8") to the subject. These do not require phantom power, but would still require an audio interface to a computer. These 2 mics MAY also benefit greatly by using a Cloudlifter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1177578-REG/cloud_microphones_cl_1_cloudlifter_mic_activator.html

Q: 2. On/off switch?

A: There is not an on/off switch. It would need to either be unplugged or, preferably, muted (or turned all the way down) at the soundboard, for it to not be on. Also, this requires phantom power to operate. But all of those things are very deliberate and appropriate. Generally speaking, no mic in this class of mics anywhere has an on/off switch. Why? Because this mic is much more powerful and sensitive than a standard hand-held mic. And it is designed for picking up singers or instruments that are just out of reach to the mic anyways.. .and the act of a person just touching the mic, in a higher volume application, will easily cause a thumping sound noticeable to the audience. Again, rightly so. This is NOT suppose to have a person's mouth just a an inch or two away. That is not what this mic is for. It is for (a) recording a group of voices/instruments that are a few feet away, not inches away... so it picks up sounds that are further away than a hand held vocal mic will so. To do that, it is much more sensitive and shouldn't be touched during operation. If you have to move it during a performance, then the sound person should mute it at the soundboard during the move, your you'll hear lots of popping and cracking noises. That all being said, this is all the way it is suppose to work... if any of these things were not true, the mic wouldn't be able to accomplish its main missions very well. It does what it was designed to do VERY well at a GREAT price for the excellent quality of mic this is. i've used several of these for years and have been very happy with them.

Q: 3. Can you power these using 12V Phantom Power?

A: Yes, the Shure MX418D/C can operate using between 11 to 52V phantom power.

Q: 4. Any idea how to store and transport several of these (we have 12)? I can't find any case made specifically for gooseneck microphones, at this point thinking of just buying multiple large hardshell cases and cutting out foam to somewhat fit them, not ideal or cheap but can't think of any other solution.

A: I don't really know. Ours came in a slim box and the mic was wrapped in bubble wraps.

Q: 5. Does this microphone have a mute button feature?

A: I know this is an older question but you alter how the push button functions, so it comes from the factory as push to mute, but you can alter it to be also be push to talk or push on/off, you just open the base and slide the tiny little switch to the desired setting.

Q: 6. how much weight can this support?

A: A load capacity is not listed with this arm, however it is designed specifically for use with cameras from Marshall like the CV502-WPMB, which only weighs 5 ounces. If you are looking to hold a more significant amount of weight this is probably not going to be the proper solution. So that we may best assist you finding the proper product for your needs feel free to email us directly at askbh@bhphoto.com.

Q: 7. what country is this microphone made in?

A: This microphone is manufactured at Shure's factory in Mexico.

Q: 8. Any thoughts on a make up artist using this light for what they do?

A: This will work very nicely for a make up artist & it comes with batteries.

Q: 9. Can I connect it to my laptop?

A: This condenser goose neck mic can be used with a computer with the addition of an audio interface, such as the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2x2 USB Audio Interface (3rd Generation), BH #FOSCARSOLO3G. The audio interface can provide the necessary 48 volt phantom power that the mic requires, as well as convert the analog signal into a digital signal, which then conects via the included USB cable to your computer.

Q: 10. Is the base threaded?

A: It is and will attach to any standard mic stand.

[Phantom Power] We have sides open to outside with tradewinds. This gets the capsule close to the speaker so better gain before feedback

[Cardioid] Using this on the podium at church. It replaces our previous podium gooseneck that after many years of use started to pick up too much sound on the stage area creating feedback issues. I was specifically wanting to try a mic with a super cardioid pattern. This mic is just a tiny bit longer than I wanted but all the other super cardioid mics I could find were too short. The mic works well and sounds great. Rejection of sounds from the side is very good. As expected from a super cardioid it does pick up a little sound from the rear but at a very low volume that does not create any issues for us. The shock mount flange works well and greatly reduces sound from physical interaction with the podium and footsteps in the area. I like that the windscreen is a snap-on. Many windscreens on our last gooseneck disappeared because they came off too easily.
Very happy with the mic and are expecting many years of reliable performance from it.

[Mono] We bought this microphone to replace an older one on the pulpit of our church. It not only looks much better because it is smaller and discreet, the sound quality is considerably better than the previous microphone. This is an excellent piece of equipment and highly recommended without reservation. Thanks to B&H for alerting us to it!

[Cardioid] When you're dealing with non-public speakers standing before the microphone, a simple control to maintain proper placement of the mic's pickup pattern is so valuable and this simply designed gooseneck manages the podium with ease, all while minimizing it's physical presence in the space. Plus... it's a Shure!!

[White] The microphone was fairly simple to install--either had to drill a 7/8 or a 1-3/4 hole in the pulpit to establish a firm holder, but the hardware was there and the microphone works very well.
