The computer running the software does not need to be on 24/7 unless you want the analytics. Once the A/P is set up via computer it will deliver wifi without the controller being online. Running the Unifi full stack using USG and full time controller/CloudKey will allow you to get detailed system analytics and a lot of the advance features that Unifi provides in the equipment (VLANS, port forwarding, Intrusion Detection/Prevention, etc.).
