The CMC 1 is a miniature Colette Series microphone amplifier offering uncompromising high fidelity in a lightweight and ultracompact form factor for studio recording, broadcast, and live stage applications. Presented as an alternative to the renowned Schoeps CMC 6 amplifier, the CMC 1 is compatible with all existing MK mic capsules and Colette active accessories (available separately).

It features a balanced XLR output, compliance with 12 or 48V phantom power, and low current consumption. Its Schoeps RFI Shield provides high immunity from RF interference for a clean, low-noise signal. The CMC 1 supports the high maximum SPLs tolerated by the various MK mic capsules.

  • Complete alternative to the renowned CMC 6 amplifier
  • Can be used in place of the CMC 6 with no compromise
  • Electrical characteristics of the CMC 1 are equal to, or even better than, those of the CMC 6
  • 1.4" long (about a third the size of the CMC 6)
  • 1.3 ounces (about 40% lighter than the CMC 6)
  • Fully compatible with all existing MK capsules and Colette active accessories such as the CUT 60 and RC tubes
  • Very-high immunity from RF interference with the Schoeps RFI Shield
  • Includes mic clip for easy attachment to a mic stand
  • Suspension mounts such as the Rycote INV-6 are available separately

The MK 4 is part of the Colette series of modular capsules designed for use with the CMC preamplifiers. The cardioid polar pattern results in maximum rejection of rear incidental audio signal, eliminating off-axis noise and feedback. The cardioid pattern allows microphone placement to occur farther from the sound source than a pressure transducer of equivalent sensitivity. The MK 4 is ideal for both speech and music capturing, resulting in rich detail without coloration. The MK 4 is also a viable solution for X/Y or Mid-Side stereo recording.

Its flat frequency response and the constancy of its directional pattern for all frequencies are the basis of the MK 4’s sound quality. Even in the diffuse sound field, its frequency response is flat, with a slight increase at 10 kHz compensating for high-frequency losses in the room.

  • Cardioid polar pattern effectively rejects rear and off-axis audio signal, resulting in greater signal-to-noise ratio and feedback rejection
  • Excellent directional response allows the MK 4 to be placed at further proximities from the signal source without degradation
  • Wide, linear frequency response ensures accurate detail regardless of the source signal

This elegant miniature table base with variable inclination and insulation from solid-borne sound can be used unobtrusively. An elegant cable routing is achieved when the cable (available separately) is hung in the wire eyelet, which is located between the pins and bottom plate.

The T 20 can also be operated without the vertical spacer if it is intended to be used near the table. The 3/8" table flange F 5 (available separately) is suitable for a fixed installation at the table.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How far can a speaker be and the cmc641 would still pic up the voice

A: Beyond 5-6 feet, a speaking voice will start to sound distant from the Schoeps CMC641 Set Colette Series Supercardioid Microphone Set (Gray).

Q: 2. Would this Rycote Windshield Kit accommodate the DPA 4018C combination?

A: The DPA will be too long to fit in this windsheild.

Q: 3. Is there a recommended field recorder for a high end mic like this? Is a Zoom F3 good enough?

A: The Zoom F3 would be an excellent choice for use with the Schoeps CMC641. It offers high-quality recording in 32-bit, which allows for great dynamic range with sensitive microphones.

Q: 4. What's the difference between the 6 and the 6U amplifier??? Thanks

A: TheCMC 6U is the a CMC 6 preamplifier that operates with phantom power. There are other CMC 6 models of this preamp that can operate with batteries or connect to wireless systems.

Q: 5. Would mounting this on camera work well when trying to get audio of a moving documentary subject?

A: Yes, the Schoeps CMC641 Set Colette Series Supercardioid Microphone Set could indeed serve as a high-quality on-camera microphone for capturing the audio of subjects in close range situations. The camera would need to be equipped with a 48V capable XLR input connection to accommodate the Schoeps.

Q: 6. Hey sound guys and cam ops, what if i put this on my camera top? for run and gun documentary filming? Will there be difference?

A: The Schoeps MiniCMIT is a high-quality short shotgun microphone that can be camera-mounted and used for run-and-gun documentary filming with excellent results.

Q: 7. Will this work for the DPA 4018c? Seems like it would due to the size of comparable mics.

A: Yes, the Rycote 041110 InVision INV-6 SOFT Shockmount is compatible for use with the DPA Microphones 4018C Compact Supercardioid Microphone,

Q: 8. I am updating my Samson MTR 231, what differences should I expect between both mics, please?

A: In comparison, the Sennheiser is the more feature rich. 3 step low cut filter and 3 step pad. You are also getting more selectable pickup patterns. These allow you to more precisely tailor the mics performance to a specific application. Comparatively the mic are similar in self noise, however the Sennheiser offers better specs in dynamic range as well as signal to noise ratio. Regarding frequency response, the Sennheiser is relatively flat, with the Samson featuring a slight boost in the higher frequencies. This will generally be interpreted as the Sennheiser having a warmer sound.

Q: 9. What is the diameter of the base for this item?

A: The Atlas DMS10E has a 10 diameter cast iron base.

Q: 10. Hey guys, is this product the right one to get if I plan on using with a SD 633 mixer which can supply 48V phantom? It's confusing to know whether I need this or the more expensive $1900 mic. How does it compare with Senn 8060 or MKH 50? Is this mic no good in humid conditions or with possible RF interference?

A: Thank you for your Question. If humidity and RF are a big concern i would highly recommend sticking with the 8060. The Schoeps is great but it does not have built in protections again humidity or RF interference.

[Mono] They're Schoeps so there's little to say about that. I've used this stereo set in a variety of ways. From recording choirs to field recording train stations and dance rehearsals. They're crystal clear and capture sound exactly as you hear it. It's incredible how compact they are. The preamps are compatible with other Schoeps Colette capsules so there's a lot of modularity you can get with this set.

You're making a big investment with this stereo set and you get what you pay for.

[Mono] I use a pair of these for my MS setup(cmc1’s, mk8, mk22). When these were released in 2019 it was welcomed with open arms. I went from a 13” to 6.7” Rycote windshield. Amazing! Size and weight is a big deal for me as I hike to my locations and I carry the mentioned MS setup plus an ORTF(2 ccm4’s). They perform excellent as expected and they draw less battery power than the CMC6. I had no reason to not own a pair.

[Phantom Power] MK22 cartridges are halfway between the MK21 Wide Cardioid and the MK4 Cardioid - fairly directional but with extended base response. I frequently record in highly reverberant venues, such as cathedrals. Used as space microphones, the MK22 gives a clear sound with good stereo image, and a good balance with ambience. I plan to use them on a 1 meter stereo in ORTF configuration, with a pair of spaced MK22 microphones. Omnis tend to be muddy in this application and cards lose the warmth I seek. The MK22s will form the core sound - everything else is just for emphasis. MK22s are also effective for chamber music, often in conjunction with a pair of MK2H (far field) Omnis.

[Low Cut/HPF] I use an array of CMC1 mics with Omni, wide and regular cardioid to capture multiple stereo imaging options simultaneously. I use the Grace 66 cm SpaceBar with multiple mounts on it. The stereo bar has 5/8-27 (standard US) mic mounts only. But the Rycote uses the 3/8-16 (more commonly used in EU). The brass adapter is provided (as seen in the product image), but it does raise the mounts an additional 2 cm. It would be nice if these were instead default 5/8-27 thread with an internal adapter for the 3/8-16, because then the installed height would be the same for either thread option. This is a minor gripe, but not trivial when trying to keep an inconspicuous low-profile of the mic bar.

The compliance of the mount is a perfect match for the CMC1, completely eliminating conducted noise from the stand reaching the mics (like foot-thumping on the stage when the mic-stand is on the stage - big problem with the rigid factory mounts that come with the Schoeps mics).

Given the really small bodies of the CMC1, I would not recommend using a standard XLR connector with this combination: the weight of the connector and cable will distort the mounts, and reduce the effectiveness of the shock-mount. I made custom cables using Cable Techniques low-profile right-angle XLR (BH #CACTBX3FR), and Mogami W2697 thin cable (BH# MOW2697164BK) which fits perfectly in the strain-relief on the Rycote mount. The cable capacitance is higher than standard mic cable, but for only a 20' length - it is far below the driving limit of the mics, so no worries about HF attenuation.

Be careful how you store these, as if they are stored for long periods in a deformed-position, they take a while to straighten-out again. These are the best shock-mounts I have found - I use a similar model for the Neumann KM-184 as well.

[Cardioid] Can never fault these microphones, but wish the case had cut outs for the included clips included like the standard stereo set does.

[Cardioid] Very detailed and precise, but not cold or harsh. I use this for voice-over work (character & narration), and it really delivers. An excellent mic, very sensitive and articulate. Made in Germany in the same factory as Neumann mics (Sennheiser owns Neumann), so you know it's quality, and it sounds like it.

[1.425 lb] I have a small project studio and my main guitar amp is a vintage 1967 Fender Princeton guitar amp. Before purchasing this microphone, I miced it with a classic Sennheiser 409 which records great tone but I wanted something a with a little more high end, enter the MK 4. The MK 4 adds a nice dimension to the 409 and I mix them both together to capture the Princeton the way I want it. It also did not break the bank.

[End Address] All my go to microphones for field location audio are first and foremost Schoeps. I have a pair of Schoeps cmc641s and snagged a cmit5u when it was first introduced. I was in the market for adding a second cmit5u and saw that the miniCMIT had just been released. So glad I waited for this newer version. It's size makes it incredibly versatile in tight locations. It's lighter in weight than its big brother (cmit5u) but has the same sonic quality. The only thing you give up on the mini model is some of the filter options. I've used this on multiple shoots and interviews and it is a stellar microphone. The one thing I appreciate most about Schoeps microphones is the overall lack of coloration. Once I'm back in my studio listening to playback I can close my eyes and it's like the talent is sitting there right next to me speaking clear, uncolored, natural audio. That being said there is a lot of buzz about Schoeps microphones being susceptible to humidity causing the mic to motorboat. I have only had this happen once with my cmit5u in an extremely humid interior interview. For that reason I highly recommend you always have on hand a microphone that is impervious to humidity and moisture (Rode NTG-3, Sennheiser MKH 50, Sennheiser MKH 416 or whatever you prefer). But otherwise all my Schoeps have performed well in some very humid environments. If I were headed to the Amazon Rain Forest or somewhere incredibly wet and humid I would leave all my Schoeps at home and go with a sure thing that could endure that much moisture. And yes, there are times I will choose another mic for very specific reasons dictated by the room or the talent's voice, but otherwise I'm swinging a Schoeps on my pole at least 95% of the time. Money well spent.

[Solid-State] The new CMC1 is great, super small, awesome for gigs. I have it for only 2 weeks, but the few times I used I was very happy!

[Gray] While it took 11 weeks for them to arrive (due to Covid), I am very pleased to have this matched pair. They are great as a main pickup or for spot mic'ing. When neither a cardioid or an omni capsule will do, this is the perfect choice.
