The matte gray Schoeps CMC 1 is a miniature Colette Series microphone amplifier offering uncompromising high fidelity in a lightweight and ultracompact form factor for studio recording, broadcast, and live stage applications. Presented as an alternative to the renowned Schoeps CMC 6 amplifier, the CMC 1 is compatible with all existing MK mic capsules and Colette active accessories (available separately).

It features a balanced XLR 3-pin output, compliance with 12 or 48V phantom power, and low current consumption. Its Schoeps RFI Shield provides high immunity from RF interference for a clean, low-noise signal. The CMC 1 supports the high maximum SPLs tolerated by the various MK mic capsules (available separately). A stand adapter is supplied with the CMC 1.

  • Complete, no-compromise alternative to the renowned CMC 6 amplifier
  • Electrical characteristics of the CMC 1 are equal to, or even better than, those of the CMC 6 (flat frequency response, very-low distortion, and constant output impedance across the audio frequency range)
  • Only 1.4" long (about a third the size of the CMC 6)
  • Weighs just 1.3 ounces
  • Fully compatible with all existing MK capsules and Colette active accessories such as the CUT 60 and RC tubes
  • Compatible with all accessories of the CCM series
  • Very-high immunity from RF interference with the Schoeps RFI Shield
  • Optimized RF protection of the CMC 1 makes it ideal for use with transmitters such as the Audio Limited A 10
  • Balanced, direct-coupled, Class-A output circuit
  • Output is filtered in the ultrasonic range to prevent interference, e.g. from camera autofocus

The Schoeps MK 5 is part of the Colette series of modular capsules designed for use with the CMC mic amplifiers. With the Schoeps MK 5, pattern switching is purely mechanical via a sliding lever on the side of the capsule. The result in each setting is like an independent microphone capsule with the same quality as the MK 2S / MK 4, and very similar (though not identical) frequency and polar response characteristics. In contrast to most dual-diaphragm microphones, the cardioid setting of the MK 5 maintains its directivity even at the lowest frequencies, and has high-frequency response up to 20 kHz. In addition, the MK 5 has excellent low-frequency response in the omnidirectional setting along with the low sensitivity toward wind, vocal “popping” noise, and solid-borne sound typical of pressure transducers.

  • Mechanical switching between omnidirectional and cardioid patterns
  • True one-diaphragm system
  • Pure pressure transducer in the omni setting; pressure gradient transducer in the cardioid setting
  • Can be used in nearly any situation; often suggested as an initial acquisition

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. This is very similar to the H3-VR, does anyone know if this will have upgraded microphones or would it be the same as the H3-VR in terms of sound quality?

A: Sound quality is the same as H3-VR,

Q: 2. Is there a recommended field recorder for a high end mic like this? Is a Zoom F3 good enough?

A: The Zoom F3 would be an excellent choice for use with the Schoeps CMC641. It offers high-quality recording in 32-bit, which allows for great dynamic range with sensitive microphones.

Q: 3. Having this microphone a built in amplifier does it require phantom power?

A: Yes, the Schoeps CCM 41 LG does require phantom power.

Q: 4. Does this have a BINAURAL MODE like the H3-VR?

A: Yes. According to Zoom representative Mike, the VRH-8 will have a binaural mode, as the He does. Mike says that they do NOT have a delivery date for the VRH-8, as of yet, though they are hoping to have it by Oct 1.

Q: 5. Hey sound guys and cam ops, what if i put this on my camera top? for run and gun documentary filming? Will there be difference?

A: The Schoeps MiniCMIT is a high-quality short shotgun microphone that can be camera-mounted and used for run-and-gun documentary filming with excellent results.

Q: 6. Will this suspension fit with Sennheiser 8040, 30 and 40?

A: It might but it comes with all the Schoeps mic's. You cannot buy this without the mic's.

Q: 7. What is a good schock mount/suspension holder to fit this microphone? I realize this mic is predominantly used indoors, but if I am in a situation where I need to use it outside, what product to reduce wind effect will fit this mic?

A: I have a Rycote Blimp with a lyre mount for bad windy conditions and the usual dead kittens for general breezes. But you said it yourself, this is an indoor mic. Moreover, it is a short mic so not so great at a distance of more than a few feet unless you have an amplified audio target. If you have critical audio needs outdoors, your better bet is to rent a good shotgun mic or buy something like the Sennheiser 416, Sanken Cs3, or Schoeps CMIT if you want to go all in. I have used the CMC6 outdoors (without needing a blimp). If you can get in close, it's OK but at say four or five feet, I don't know that the 'Schoeps' difference is any longer in effect. These weren't scientific shootouts and audio environments vary but I suspect plain old microphone physics trump German engineering at a certain distance.

Q: 8. Is this different than the foam windscreen that's included with the CMC641? Thanks.

A: yes, these are different. the screens that come stock with Schoeps mics are the cheaper B5 screens, which are made from ALL foam. these B5D's have a hollow interior like a basket type windscreen, with a velvety foam exterior covering. the B5's will do fine if the mic setup isn't moving, but if you're using the mics on a boom pole, you'll want the B5D's, because they have better "wind" and movement protection vs the cheaper B5's. supposedly, you can hear a "swoosh" effect when moving the mics on a boom pole too quickly! however, I'm a "taper" who records live Audio music with a stereo mic setup, and I just bought these to use indoors if my mic stand gets bumped or there are fans inside of the venue I'm recording at! so it depends on how you're going to use your mic/s. I hope that was helpful!

Q: 9. Is this VRH-8 compatible with the extension cable ECM-6? Thank you

A: This capsule is designed for the H8 recorder. This cable is not listed as compatible with the H8.

Q: 10. Do they make these in black?

A: The Schoeps B5-D Hollow Foam Windscreen is available in gray, and chroma green. Unfortunately, there isn't a black color available. Here is a link to the Chroma Green version: https://bhpho.to/3IO8zHM

[Phantom Power] I already own an mk4, and I wanted to get a second mk4 so I could record a stereo pair for piano and acoustic guitar and it sounds so good. The mk4 I already own, I've had for about 4 years now, and it's my go to mic for everything -- strings, piano, guitar, voice. I have tried many many mics above and below this price point and to my ears, none sound as natural. I rarely need EQ when using schoeps mics. It also matches my other mk4 perfectly. Very happy with the purchase. Also B+H customer service was great and the capsule arrived quickly.

[Solid-State] It's a beautiful microphone. I bought it because I wanted something clean that I could distort according to my needs in post and this has that flexibility as well as having a standalone beautiful sound.

[End Address] They're Schoeps so there's little to say about that. I've used this stereo set in a variety of ways. From recording choirs to field recording train stations and dance rehearsals. They're crystal clear and capture sound exactly as you hear it. It's incredible how compact they are. The preamps are compatible with other Schoeps Colette capsules so there's a lot of modularity you can get with this set.

You're making a big investment with this stereo set and you get what you pay for.

[End Address] I'm using this mic to not over to provide voice-over commentary for a documentary that I'm working on, but also for Zoom meetings. Together, with the absolutely tiny stand (Schoeps TCg Miniature Table Stand), the mic is a discrete 'boom' mic that disappears on the desktop and avoids extraneous room sounds. While expensive, the quality and size are unbeatable.

And if you're already using the mic for its typical use, it can now dual-purpose as a very high quality desktop mic using the Schoeps TCg stand.

[End Address] I have been using this mic for over 7 years now, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best investment I have ever made. The only issue I can see is: If your pre is having issues, if your pre is low quality or if your pre is perfect, you WILL hear it. This mic is unbelievably clear for a shotgun. I would recommend a Sound Devices pre-amp equipped recorder (like the 722 or 744) just because of this. The new Zoom H6 is what I'm beginning to use for misc foley or field recording, and it works very well, but, if recording anything that won't be buried, this mic warrants a strong, clear pre-amp like from the Sound Devices. I highly recommend this mic.

[End Address] I'm using this with a CMC6 and a CMIT5U for an M/S rig. I know there has been some debate on Gearslutz regarding Schoeps vs Sennheiser for this application but to my ears, the sound is great. Gives me an accurate and clear reproduction of the sounds being recorded. It's pricey but I'm not afraid to pay for the results that I get using this gear.

[Solid-State] While it took 11 weeks for them to arrive (due to Covid), I am very pleased to have this matched pair. They are great as a main pickup or for spot mic'ing. When neither a cardioid or an omni capsule will do, this is the perfect choice.

[End Address] MK22 cartridges are halfway between the MK21 Wide Cardioid and the MK4 Cardioid - fairly directional but with extended base response. I frequently record in highly reverberant venues, such as cathedrals. Used as space microphones, the MK22 gives a clear sound with good stereo image, and a good balance with ambience. I plan to use them on a 1 meter stereo in ORTF configuration, with a pair of spaced MK22 microphones. Omnis tend to be muddy in this application and cards lose the warmth I seek. The MK22s will form the core sound - everything else is just for emphasis. MK22s are also effective for chamber music, often in conjunction with a pair of MK2H (far field) Omnis.
