The matte gray Schoeps CMC 1 is a miniature Colette Series microphone amplifier offering uncompromising high fidelity in a lightweight and ultracompact form factor for studio recording, broadcast, and live stage applications. Presented as an alternative to the renowned Schoeps CMC 6 amplifier, the CMC 1 is compatible with all existing MK mic capsules and Colette active accessories (available separately). It features a balanced XLR 3-pin output, compliance with 12 or 48V phantom power, and low current consumption. Its Schoeps RFI Shield provides high immunity from RF interference for a clean, low-noise signal. The CMC 1 supports the high maximum SPLs tolerated by the various MK mic capsules (available separately). A stand adapter is supplied with the CMC 1.

  • Complete, no-compromise alternative to the renowned CMC 6 amplifier
  • Electrical characteristics of the CMC 1 are equal to, or even better than, those of the CMC 6 (flat frequency response, very-low distortion, and constant output impedance across the audio frequency range)
  • Only 1.4" long (about a third the size of the CMC 6)
  • Weighs just 1.3 ounces
  • Fully compatible with all existing MK capsules and Colette active accessories such as the CUT 60 and RC tubes
  • Compatible with all accessories of the CCM series
  • Very-high immunity from RF interference with the Schoeps RFI Shield
  • Optimized RF protection of the CMC 1 makes it ideal for use with transmitters such as the Audio Limited A 10
  • Balanced, direct-coupled, Class-A output circuit
  • Output is filtered in the ultrasonic range to prevent interference, e.g. from camera autofocus

The Schoeps MK 21 is part of the Colette series of modular capsules designed for use with the CMC mic amplifiers. The directivity of the wide cardioid lies between the omni and the cardioid. The idea behind its development is to combine the advantages of these two patterns. The low-frequency behavior of the MK 21 is better than that of the cardioid, and proximity effect is less pronounced. The wide cardioid polar pattern is extremely consistent across the frequency range. Laterally arriving direct sound and reflections are picked up without added coloration. The MK 21 is preferred when a slight directional effect and a warm, natural sound image are desired.

When used as a spot microphone, the distance from the sound source should be slightly smaller than when using a cardioid due to lower directivity index. The low directivity of this capsule type prevents it from generating large enough level differences for X/Y use, though mid-side and near-coincident spacings are often successful.

  • Ideal as a soloist microphone or main microphone
  • Extremely consistent polar response leads to a very natural sound
  • Combines the advantages of the omni (warm sound) and the cardioid (directivity)
  • Popular as a main microphone pair at a spacing of approximately 1' and angled at ±45°

This Schoeps stereo set comes with two CMC 1 microphone amps, two matched MK 21 capsules, a certificate of matching, two stand clamps, two foam windscreens, a hook-and-loop fastener cable strap, and a premium case.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hey guys, is this product the right one to get if I plan on using with a SD 633 mixer which can supply 48V phantom? It's confusing to know whether I need this or the more expensive $1900 mic. How does it compare with Senn 8060 or MKH 50? Is this mic no good in humid conditions or with possible RF interference?

A: Thank you for your Question. If humidity and RF are a big concern i would highly recommend sticking with the 8060. The Schoeps is great but it does not have built in protections again humidity or RF interference.

Q: 2. How far can a speaker be and the cmc641 would still pic up the voice

A: Beyond 5-6 feet, a speaking voice will start to sound distant from the Schoeps CMC641 Set Colette Series Supercardioid Microphone Set (Gray).

Q: 3. Would this Rycote Windshield Kit accommodate the DPA 4017C combination?

A: Yes, this will be compatible. The 4017C with preamp is just slightly longer (0.12") than the CMIT mini.

Q: 4. Would this Rycote Windshield Kit accommodate the DPA 4018C combination?

A: The DPA will be too long to fit in this windsheild.

Q: 5. Will this suspension fit with Sennheiser 8040, 30 and 40?

A: It might but it comes with all the Schoeps mic's. You cannot buy this without the mic's.

Q: 6. Is there a recommended field recorder for a high end mic like this? Is a Zoom F3 good enough?

A: The Zoom F3 would be an excellent choice for use with the Schoeps CMC641. It offers high-quality recording in 32-bit, which allows for great dynamic range with sensitive microphones.

Q: 7. It says windjammer included! which windjammer is it? if it's Olympus WJ-1, it's not compatible to this kit at all, obviously!

A: Included would be the Olympus WJ-1 Windjammer, this comes this way from the manufacturer.

Q: 8. What is a good schock mount/suspension holder to fit this microphone? I realize this mic is predominantly used indoors, but if I am in a situation where I need to use it outside, what product to reduce wind effect will fit this mic?

A: I have a Rycote Blimp with a lyre mount for bad windy conditions and the usual dead kittens for general breezes. But you said it yourself, this is an indoor mic. Moreover, it is a short mic so not so great at a distance of more than a few feet unless you have an amplified audio target. If you have critical audio needs outdoors, your better bet is to rent a good shotgun mic or buy something like the Sennheiser 416, Sanken Cs3, or Schoeps CMIT if you want to go all in. I have used the CMC6 outdoors (without needing a blimp). If you can get in close, it's OK but at say four or five feet, I don't know that the 'Schoeps' difference is any longer in effect. These weren't scientific shootouts and audio environments vary but I suspect plain old microphone physics trump German engineering at a certain distance.

Q: 9. Is there any advantage to using PL over EF mount for use on a Canon C500 mkii?

A: PL tends to be a stronger locking connection over EF. Also, the Canon C500 camera has a PL mount version that may require you to work with PL lenses.

Q: 10. Does this work with Sennheiser MKH 8060?

A: The Rycote Windshield Kit for Schoeps MiniCMIT is designed for use with the Schoeps MiniCMIT Short Shotgun Microphone, which has a slightly different physical form factor than the Sennheiser MKH 8060 Shotgun Microphone. A more preferable windshield product for the MKH 8060 is the Rycote Modular Windshield WS 1 Kit MZL for the Sennheiser MKH 8060 Microphone (BH #RYMWS1MZLKIT): https://bhpho.to/3NPFL44

[Gray] In short: low self-noise, improved isolation from room reverb, balanced frequency response, needs an audio recorder with quality preamps

I used to run a shotgun mic into my Canon C70 for all my interviews, indoor or outdoor, and now my workflow and quality has improved dramatically. I find this microphone well balanced across the frequency range, with soft s sibilance and no boominess in low or mid-range frequencies. It does a slightly better job at isolating from room reverb, which results in greater source sound clarity. You need to pair this mic with the clean preamps of an equally exceptional audio recorder to really appreciate the sound, as the self-noise levels of your camera preamps can disguise how truly quiet this mic's self-noise actually is. It needed about 15db more gain than my shotgun mic, but between the audio recorder upgrade and this mic my noise floor is now -5db lower than running my shotgun straight into camera. What I hear through my headphones now is truly a natural mirror of real life sound and room tone, not merely an interpretation of it mixed with the hiss of camera preamps. Hard to describe until you A/B test for yourself, but it is the most natural sounding microphone I've ever used!

[Phantom Power] I use a pair of these for my MS setup(cmc1’s, mk8, mk22). When these were released in 2019 it was welcomed with open arms. I went from a 13” to 6.7” Rycote windshield. Amazing! Size and weight is a big deal for me as I hike to my locations and I carry the mentioned MS setup plus an ORTF(2 ccm4’s). They perform excellent as expected and they draw less battery power than the CMC6. I had no reason to not own a pair.

[Phantom Power] They're Schoeps so there's little to say about that. I've used this stereo set in a variety of ways. From recording choirs to field recording train stations and dance rehearsals. They're crystal clear and capture sound exactly as you hear it. It's incredible how compact they are. The preamps are compatible with other Schoeps Colette capsules so there's a lot of modularity you can get with this set.

You're making a big investment with this stereo set and you get what you pay for.

[End Address] I've only used it once so far for and indoor scene but I couldn't help but notice how it performed over my Sennheiser MKH 416. True, the MKH 416 is better equipped for outside but up until now that was all I had. I loved how if my actors were slightly off from their spot or turned their heads I suffered no roll-off problems at all. The over all tone of the voices was so clear and natural. I can't wait to use this mic on a larger scale.

[Low Cut/HPF] Can never fault these microphones, but wish the case had cut outs for the included clips included like the standard stereo set does.

[End Address] I am using this for recording violin, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and piano, and all sound great. I already own the mk4 and love it, but wanted something a little more directional that can reject some of the room noise, since I am not recording in a totally isolated environment. The mk41 sounds just as good as the mk4 and definitely cuts down on any background noise. Only downside is that I have less leeway to move around when recording, whereas with the mk4, which has a wider capture, it's a little more forgiving. But I got the mk41 specifically for this purpose to just focus on what's directly in front of it, and it's doing the job even better than expected without any loss of quality or musicality in the tone. Love it! And plus one for B+H's amazing customer service. They were extremely helpful.
