A: The pole extends automatically using built in air pressure. You have to push it down. Not trivial given it can raise a heavy TV. I stand close to it and place the palm of my hand on top of the tube that rises (has a plastic cap so no sharp edges). Then I kind of lock that shoulder and use my weight to lower it.
