Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello. How well does the rechargeable battery perform in cold weather? best skies are often in the dead of winter. Thanks in advance.

A: I've used it in the cold mountain-top but have not run the battery down, most I've seen is about 4 hours use with battery still doing well. I do take a USB battery tank along as a backup.

Q: 2. I have a standard camera tripod dovetail plate at hand, do I need anything else to attach my camera to this mount?

A: Yes as long as it's a standard Vixen-Style Dovetail Saddle that is all you need.

Q: 3. Does this come with the alt/azi base or not? The manual leads one to believe BOTH the Tracker and alt/azi base are sold together for $299

A: Yes the the Alt Az base is Black and the motorized part with battery is Red. It comes with everything including a USB cord for charging and Polar scope.

Q: 4. Hello, what's the weight of the package of the iOptron SkyHunter Portable AZ GoTo Mount with EQ Base and iPolar Scope? Thanks.

A: Mount weighs 2.9 lbs (1.3kg) Payload 11 lbs (5kg) (balanced, exclude CW)

Q: 5. Accepts cameras weighing up to 3 kg (6.6 lbs) Is the weight of the ball head and optional counter weight kit included in the weight limit?

A: That is the mount alone without the Ball Head, and Counter Weight added.

Q: 6. Can I solar align in the daytime to photograph the eclipse ?

A: Exposures will be so relatively short accurate polar alignment will not be necessary. Simply point the mount to magnetic north and that will be more than sufficient; especially since the camera lens focal length will be under 500mm, I assume.

Q: 7. Is the scope able to perform a good alignment with the South Pole, for those in the Southern Hemisphere? Or is it only good for the northern hemisphere users?

A: It is possible, but far from easy & a solid working knowledge of the Sth Polar region of the sky is required. Sigma Octantis suffers from being sufficiently faint that once it is naked-eye visible, it is indistinct from its surrounding background of almost equally faint stars. Decent approximate alignment for exposures 30s with wider lenses can be achieved with the 'scope removed by using the opening for it as a sighting hole for the Crux/Centaurus (pointers) method. Precise adjustment is fiddly & best practised in daylight using a terrestrial landmark to familiarise yourself with those controls first. That said, this device is a tiny fraction of the price of a cheap Equatorial telescope mount, (& that will also need aligning). This instrument needs practise & patience to get good results from it & it would be unrealistic to expect to get great photos on your first few times in the field with it. Q: 8. Does this come with the cloth carrying case, as I have seen on the iOptron website?

A: There a carrying case but it isn't cloth; it's more like a synthetic mete rial.

Q: 9. Does the iOptron SkyTracker Pro rotate 360 degrees?

A: Yes...take 24 hours to rotate 360 degrees. Never needed to use it for more than about 4 hours though. Great addition to my night sky imaging kit.

Q: 10. can I attach a Celestron Evolution 6" to this mount?

A: Yes, you can

[0 to 60°] I ordered a CEM26 to replace the EQM-35 that had broke after only 2 months with a load half of what it is rated. The quality and design is so much better than the Synta clones (Skywatcher, Orion, Celestron, etc) that I am very happy with my purchase. The carry case for the mount head is very good and not cheap feeling. I would recommend this product as well as any other iOptron product if the quality is this good!

[2] Although I was a bit hesitant because I liked the profile of the previous version and the capacity of the SkyGuider, I decided to purchase the SkyTracker. At first light I mounted on a medium Manfrotto tripod. Really easy to accurately polar align. I mounted a Canon 6D with a 70-300mm IS and it tracked accurately for over an hour. Not the best seeing but good results. Can't wait for Orion season!

[42 lb] I've been doing astrophotography since days of using hypered film, and typically piggyback on one of my telescopes. However, it is a hassle and I tend not to shoot as much as I'd like. So - I wanted a tracker. Did lots of research and ended up with the Skytracker Pro. Polar alignment is easy. Build quality is very good. Easy to use and operate. Make sure you use a heavy-duty tripod. Use a good ball joint. iOptron makes one, but there are many available. I personally use Sirui ball joints. I use only prime focus lenses, as they are lighter (in general) to zooms, and they are typically much Sharper - and provide better center of gravity reducing balance issues. I use a range of lenses; 10.5mm full-frame fisheye, 16mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and a 300mm mirror lens (Yes, a mirror lens. It is very light and small and works great for this mount). With these lenses my maximum weight with camera and ball joint is max about 4 pounds. That is another reason I chose the Skytracker Pro because I did not want to have to use a counter-weight system. I just want to set up and shoot. I do highly recommend using a Lonely Speck SharpStar precision focusing filter - you will get perfect image focus, period (which is vey hard otherwise for astro work). Make sure to tighten everything up or you will have problems. My only gripe with B&H is that I wanted the red one, but received the black one.
I've included the very first image I shot using the Skytracker Pro. The day I received it I set it up and went out at night and it was pretty clear out. I shot 20 photos in succession with Nikon 85mm at f3.5 ISO 1600 20 seconds each. Stacked them in Photoshop and this is the result. I live at the beach in Florida, and it is dark where I live, but the air is thick at times. After I stacked in PS, I was amazed at the image quality using the Skytracker Pro. Love it and definitely recommend it.

[Dual Axis] I Love this setup. It is very portatble and with an auto guider it is very good for higher magnification imaging. Although it does not come with the feet shown in the photo on this site sadly :( , it comes with standard spike.

[Dual Axis] This replaced my original SkyTracker and the Pro offers even more features and is definitely more user friendly and portable. Mine had a small issue with the objective focus locking collar but iOptron sent a new finder. It's a great product, especially when you consider the old days when I owned a Byers CamTrack. It was beautifully build but a bit of a chore to set up. Kadoos to iOptron and, as always, to B&H.

[Dual Axis] Once again iOptron has come through with a very well built mount. The mount is rock solid with the available LiteRoc tripod. Handy aluminum case for the mount head.
Setup is quick and easy. Go to and tracking are spot on. I am quite pleased with the iPolar alignment process. Quiet as a mouse and good looking too. Support from iOptron is excellent. Of course the B&H shopping experience was perfect as well.

[Dual Axis] Unfortunately, this was back-ordered at B&H for months. No fault of theirs. I now own one of these mounts, and am very happy with it. It is sturdy (much more so than the OEM Celestron for a C-5), and can accommodate a camera and tube for astrophotography. It was easy to set up (set up the clock for UTC, and use the DST separately), and worked pretty much out of the box. Am getting used to the iPolar, and may update this review. But for the price and the quality, this is a mount well worth your consideration.

[0 to 60°] Works as advertised. Polar aligning is fast, easy, and
accurate. I'm able to find stuff a lot easier now. I highly recommend this.
