The K-Tek KP20FT Mighty Boom Graphite Boompole 20.5'is a 6-section boompole that extends to 20.5' and collapses down to 5'. Lightweight at 3.1 lb, it features six sections made of wide graphite tubes designed to increase the stiffness and optimize handling balance. The result is quicker cueing and better user control of the microphone.

The KP20FT's removable headpiece allows for cable reconfiguration without any soldering required. The top attachment is a 3/8"-16 male thread. Included is a straight cable with a right-angle, 3-pin XLR female connector and a KFT Flow-Through base bottom module with a rubber bumper.

The locking collars feature a thick yet smooth surface allowing for a more subtle gradual extension of each section. The anodized, oval divets with exterior dimples provide a great grip and smooth feel when opening and closing each collar. The finish between the tubes allows for the sections to sleekly glide open and closed. Additionally, the Mighty Boom poles are hand-burnished to diffuse handling noise.

To allow for quick conversion when working in the field, the KP20FT is compatible with the KPCK20 cable kit and KPCCR Bottom Module (for conversion to a coiled-cable boompole with XLR side exit). It is also compatible with the KPTA Transmitter Adapter Module and KPTF Flow-Through Module. Mighty Boom boompoles are made in the USA.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The screw at the top of my boom pole has broken off in the shock mount. Is it possible to buy a replacement top screw for this boom pole?

A: K-Tek does offer replacement parts for their boom poles but B&H does not have the correct part available. You should be able to get it directly through K-Tek. You can reach them by phone at 760-727-0593 or by email at info@ktekpro.com. Their offices are located in Vista, California.

Q: 2. Will this mount the Auray DUSM-1 shockmount?

A: The Auray DUSM1 shock mount features a 3/8 female threading compatible with the K-Tek boom poles.

Q: 3. Are the locking rings made of graphite or some sort of metal. Is it wipe-able with Isopropyl alcohol?

A: The tube sections are made of graphite, but the collars, which you twist to lock/unlock the individual sections are made of aluminum and then anodized. And the collars can be cleaned with alcohol.Hope this helps,Your friends at K-Tek

Q: 4. Is this compatible with the Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Mic?

A: The rode video mic pro is a shotgun mic designed for dslr shooters. It has a mini jack for hooking into the mic jack of a dslr type camera and a cold shoe for fitting into the top of a dslr. You wouldn't want to use it on this boom pole. What you want is the rode NTG series shotgun mics. These are the video professional grade shotgun microphones, the NTG-1, NTG-2, NTG-3, NTG-4, and NTG-8. I personally use the NTG-1, and it has served me well for almost 8years. It requires phantom power from whatever recording device you are connecting it to but it is a great mic. You'll need a shock mount though to fit it onto the boom pole. I would suggest the Rode SM4 shock mount. Or if you want protection from wind look no further than the rode blimp and windscreen system. With this kit you are good to go for all indoor and outdoor shooting. Hope this helps!

Q: 5. I need to replace one of the lock rings, 2nd one up. Can I purchase them here?

A: Unfortunately, B&H does not carry the collars (lock rings) for the K-TEK boom poles. To purchase these spare parts, please contact K-TEK directly at 760.727.0593.

Q: 6. Whats the benefit of Graphite over Carbon Fiber?

A: Apart from how it looks on the surface, the K-Tek KEG-150CCR Avalon Series Graphite Boompole with Internal Coiled XLR Cable will not provide noticeable benefits over a similar boom pole that is made of carbon fiber. Weight, durability, and strength are not much different between the two materials.

Q: 7. Is the side-exit XLR port suitable for a plug-on wireless transmitter (such as the Sennheiser EW series "SKP"), or will it not attach firmly enough?

A: In theory, yes, you could connect a plug-on transmitter to the side exit XLR output on the K-Tek KE-110CCR Avalon Series Aluminum Boompole with Internal XLR Cable. Ideally, the transmitter would have a locking mechanism for secure connection at the XLR output.

Q: 8. What is the fully close length?

A: two foot, five inches or 0.7 meters

Q: 9. Best way to wire this? Straight cable? XLR module for the exit?

A: The is no 'best'. It's a matter of preference.

Q: 10. what c-stand and clamps do I need with the K-Tek KE-89CC?

A: For the C-stand, you can use any model, just be sure to select one that accommodates the height you require. Any standard C-stand and boompole holder can be used. For a stand that extends 10 feet, you may like the Impact Turtle Base C-Stand - 10.75' - Chrome (B&H# IMLSCT40M). The same stand is available in different heights. For an easy to use boompole holder, consider the Auray Boompole Holder and Grip Head Kit (B&H# GBBPHK) or BoomMate Boompole Holder and Grip Head Kit (B&H# BOBPHK).

[Graphite] I know I should have gotten gloves instead, but I have sweaty hands. So this is perfect because I don't have to worry about that.

The only thing I wish it had different, is the soft loop part that the hooks dig into is not long enough. It makes it not so flexible in that sense. I use it on the KP10VCCR, so maybe because that is a 5 section boom (compared to the usual 6 section boom), the diameter is smaller?

Either way, it works well for me and I really like it.

[3/8"-16 Male] For some reason (hard use) the cable between the poll and the rocorder seems to always take the worst of it. This is the only off-the-shelf cable that holds up to the abuse.
In short, buy it. It will save your butt time and time again.

[Straight] I use the boom as both a mic boom and a pole for GoPro video camera when the camera is pole cam. I used the pole as a pole cam video in sea water and it cleaned up without corrosion to the threads or any parts. Very light and strong and highly recommended as boom pole or GoPro camera pole.

[Removable] super light and works great, it can't hear the rattle of the cable inside the tube. Now the sound guy won't get too tired :)

[Twist Lock] Very light and well finished. The locking system works good and holds tight the sections.

[Graphite] The length and lightweight features of this pole are incredible. The sections loosen and tighten with ease, and this pole also doubles as an underwater pole for my GoPro camera.

[3/8"-16 Male] Light and solid! I much rather have these guys without an internal cable, but that's just my opinion.

[Twist Lock] Going from a $50 pole to this one is quite the change. It's great in terms of weight (fully loaded it weighs less than my old pole empty). The coiled cable that it comes with is also really good quality. The right-angle connector at the top is adjustable if you want to change the angle of the pins.

Yes, it does have some handling noise because of the coiled cable inside. However, if you don't swing it like crazy, it doesn't make noise. One thing that I am doing to help alleviate this is to add 2mm thick felt to the cable, spaced out about 1 inch apart when compressed. This is so that I can still be a little rough and have the pole be more forgiving.

Something else that I like about this pole (compared to the pole I had before), is that I can keep that base pole, but change out some parts if I want. For example, if I want to get ride of the internal cabling, I can do that and not make it look funny. One thing that I have in mind as a possible change, would be to change out the right-angle XLR port on the bottom and just use a flow-thru for a straight cable.

The tension rings can be a little slippery when you want to adjust length. For example, when you want to extend the pole, sometimes one of the bigger rings will slip and make the smaller sections rotate a little. For me, if I leave a little more room so I can grip it with my fingers to prevent that, works just fine.

It's not perfect, but it's great compared to what I'm used to and I still really like it for my needs.

[6] Difficult to fault this pole. Sturdy, and very well made. A fully professional piece of kit.

[XLR 3-Pin] This is not my first K-Tek boom pole (third, actually), but the shortest one in my kit was the 9’ aluminum. A good pole, but doesn’t collapse to a length that’s easy to stash in my travel case.

So I added this pole to the kit. The graphite design is lighter-weight than the aluminum, and it’s short enough when collapsed to fit in my Pelican 1615 for travel when I don’t need the longer poles.

The 9’ range is ideal for ENG, run-and-gun, and doc work, and this pole is one of the best options in that class.

And if your K-Tek pole ever needs service or maintenance, K-Tek customer service is top-notch.
