This 4 x 5.65" Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cine IRND Filter 7-Stopfrom Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cine IRND Filter 7-Stopis a glass filter that is a mere 2mm thick so that it weighs less and can easily be incorporated into cinema camera setups on drones and gimbals or simply to just provide you with a lighter option. At 2mm thick it weighs about half the weight of standard thickness 4mm ND filters.

Using an optional Formatt Hitech 2mm filter tray, the filter can be used with most ARRI, Bright Tangerine, Chroziel, and Wooden Camera matte boxes. No tray is required for matte boxes with clamp-style filter holders such as the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom. This filter is a good complement to ultra-lightweight matte boxes like the Misfit Atom. The filter is also compatible with the Formatt Hitech Firecrest 100mm MKII holder, which allows you to adapt it to threaded photography and cinema lenses from 86mm to 37mm screw-in sizes.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does it come with the frame? or is it only the fabric?

A: This would be the fabric alone. The frame would be the Westcott Scrim Jim Cine Frame Set (6 x 6') B&H # WE1833

Q: 2. What stands and connectors are recommended for this frame?

A: For a Scrim Jim Cine that is 6' by 6', a lot of people prefer to use two light stands with grip heads (Westcott part #1881) and Scrim Jim Frame Clamps (Westcott Part #1980) on each stand. If you want to use a single light stand, we recommend a heavy duty C-Stand with the same grip and clamp noted above as well as some sand bags for the base of the C-Stand.

Q: 3. Would combining one of these with the Tilta Mirage's VND filter cause issues? I realize these are IRND and the VND is not, but I'm thinking I may sometimes need more than the 2.7 stops the VND offers.

A: Using the Vaxis VFX 95 IRND 1.5 Filter for Tilta Mirage Matte Box with another ND filter will increase internal reflections from the layers of glass, but it can be done.

Q: 4. Hi! Can this be used without a frame - can I hang with clamps? Thank you!

A: The fabric would be best used with the frame as it has Velcro along the edges keeping it stretched flat to its appropriate size. I would be careful to not damage the fabric when hanging it in another way but you can certainly use it however you would like.

Q: 5. are the 4x4 plain diffusion cloths seamless?

A: Yes, the Westcott Scrim Jim Cine 1/4-Stop Diffuser Fabric (4 x 4') comes with a seamless fabric.

Q: 6. We have a Scrim Jim frame kit. Does this silk have velcro running along all edges to attach to a frame?

A: The Scrim Jim Kit underwent changes in 2016 when it was upgraded to standard industry sizes, more mounting options, and more fabric options. This product is for the Scrim Jim Cine (new version) so please check your Scrim Jim version to determine if the sizing is the same. If you have further questions, please call Westcott customer support at 419-243-7311.

Q: 7. Curious when is grid cloth better than plain cloth? Understand the difference but seeking the why. Thanks.

A: Grid cloth diffuses the light while making it more directional versus standard diffusion which simply spreads the light as needed.

Q: 8. Whats the difference between normal diffusion and grid cloth diffusion?

A: Yes the grid cloth has tiny grids (boxes) on it, but in functioning, the grid acts as a focuser for the light. Its almost like a honeycomb grid or eggcrate grid being built into the diiffusion. Though definitely *not* as effective as if you used a designated honeycomb grid.

Q: 9. I have a 6x6 Scrim Jim how do I tell if it is the old or new version? And will this fit if I have the old version?

A: Great question, William. The old version of Scrim Jim used 3/4" thick framing and the frames connected to each other using a tension fit. The new version (Scrim Jim Cine) uses a thicker 1" frame and connects using a positive locking system. The new system also has corners that are NOT built into the frame, like they were in the original version. The sizing of diffusion silks are not the same for the new version, as we standardized the sizing to what is common in the industry for the Scrim Jim Cine lineup.

Q: 10. I don't understand the amount of stops reduced, is it variable from 1 to 1/4?

A: This fabric is not variable, it reduces 1.25 stops of light.

[0.515 lb] Excellent quality. Very fragile, but that's true of all 4x5.65 glass.

[Glass] The quality of these filters is outstanding. While they are somewhat expensive, they are worth the price point. The one thing I fail to understand is with the attention to quality and detail the weak link is the installation of the light leak gasket that is included with the filter. It is a challenge to affix it to the filter and have had difficulty with every filter I have from them. I don't know why Formatt-Hitech does not place it on the filter as part of the manufacturing process.

[Glass] I was really pleased with the images that I have been able to create with this filter. As soon as I got it I took it to the coast and tried a bunch of long exposure shots at sunset. When I got the images onto my PC I was very happy to see that I could not tell which images I had used the filter on by looking at the colors. The colors were identical with and without the filter!

[Glass] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired.

I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse.

[Glass] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected.

[Glass] I had ordered a Tiffen kit and returned it, and am so thankful I did. These are seriously top notch with almost 0 color shift and NO IR Pollution!

100% worth it!

[Glass] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in:

I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens).

I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter.

I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use.

[Glass] Highly recommended.

I purchased a 4-stop ND filter (1.2). It never comes off my Sigma 105mm f/1.4.

Practically all my headshots and portraits (250 clients) since the purchase were taken with this filter. I can keep the shutter speed in a reasonable range with strobes (1/30 -- 1/200) without relying on high-speed sync. I can also keep the strobes at a reasonable range (1/4 -- 1/128), which wouldn't be possible without a 4-stop loss of light transmission.

Other ND filters have funky colors - maybe I was lucky but this one has not created any noticeable color shift. Thank you Formatt!!

[0.515 lb] Yes these cost a bit more than other brands but you do get what you pay for. You don't get the color shifts that come with Tiffens, and to some degree Schneiders. The DPs and DITs I work with still are requesting these on every shoot so it was time for me to buy a set of my own. Super happy with them.
