Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If loading in darkness, is there a notch like regular 4x5 for loading. If not, is there a way to tell?

A: There are no notches. This paper can be loaded with darkroom safely light or in complete darkness the glossy side up.

Q: 2. Please estimate exposure times Aprox. exposure times in a conventional 5 X 7 view camera?

A: I hope this helps, the ISO is rated about 3.

Q: 3. I am unfamiliar with the term emulsion IN (under Surface Finish). Can someone describe what that means, please?

A: Emulsion IN would refer to 24 x 66' and 50 x 50' rolls of this paper, which has the emulsion side of the paper rolled inward. Both rolled and sheet options come in a glossy finish.

Q: 4. Does the manufacturer has an ISO for this paper ?

A: The Technical Information data sheet for the Ilford Harman Direct Positive Fiber Based (FB) Paper sates the paper has a slow ISO speed (between ISO 1 - 3), enabling a good latitude of control.

Q: 5. what type of safe light do I need with direct positive paper?

A: Compatible with Ortho (deep red) safelights.

Q: 6. I have old and recent b&w slides; anyone have experience printing with an enlarger on this paper? Pre-flash? General exposure length? Preferred developer? Thanks in advance!

A: As always, our wonderful customers are a great resource. Please look to the product reviews for the answers to your questions. Used with care, this paper produces great results.

Q: 7. I heard that when this came out it did not fit into 4 x 5 film holders and had to be trimmed. Has this been corrected and it does fit or does it still need to be trimed?

A: Some people don't have issues and some do. It's probably a combination of different holders and a little bit of user error, hope nobody gets insulted. It seems that with some extra force the sheets should slide in. The best thing is to waste a sheet to see if the width, length or thickness is the culprit and adjust accordingly.

Q: 8. Is this available in luster?

A: Unfortunately, this paper is currently available only in glossy and emulsion-in.

Q: 9. After pre-flashing, can I use it a few hours or days later? Or should it be used immediately?

A: There is no set time listed for storing pre flashed HARMAN technology Direct Positive Fiber Based (FB) Paper (Glossy, 4 x 5", 25 Sheets). As with all photographic materials, they do degrade over time - so the shorter the time frame, the better. Be sure to store all papers in a cool and dry environment.

Q: 10. What kind of darkroom chemistry do I need to develop the paper?

A: This fiber based paper can developed in any standard B&W paper developer such as Kodak Dektol, B&H # KODG. Please see the image below for reference.
