Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this transmitter compatible with the G3 series receiver (Frequencies are the same- Group A)?

A: Thank you for your question. The G4 transmitters and receivers are backwards compatible with the G3 systems as long as they are in the same frequency group.

Q: 2. Will this work on a standard PA system or does it require a pre-amp?

A: This can connect to a standard XLR mic connection on a mixer. The mixer must provide 48v phantom power to run.

Q: 3. This has the push-to-talk function. Does it have a button to leave the mic on continuously without having to use the push feature?

A: There are DIP switch settings for leaving the mic on continuously. See page 3 of the instruction manual for settings:a href= http://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/89563.pdf target= _blank http://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/89563.pdf/a

Q: 4. Any idea how to store and transport several of these (we have 12)? I can't find any case made specifically for gooseneck microphones, at this point thinking of just buying multiple large hardshell cases and cutting out foam to somewhat fit them, not ideal or cheap but can't think of any other solution.

A: I don't really know. Ours came in a slim box and the mic was wrapped in bubble wraps.

Q: 5. Would this mic work well for Podcasting, Virtual Meetings, Speech Videos? If not, would you recommend the Shure Sm57 or Sm7b?

A: Yes and Maybe. As a podium mic, which requires 48V phantom power, this mic MAY be a good choice, providing that it is connected to a device providing 48V phantom power, an audio interface or an audio mixer (with USB out) would be required to connect this mic to a computer. Examples include: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1479273-REG/focusrite_scarlett_solo_3g_scarlett_solo_usb_audio.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1251143-REG/shure_mvi_a_ltg_mvi_digital_audio.html/specs The Shure SM57 or SM7B are good choices, though are less sensitive mics, so require very close proximity (3-8") to the subject. These do not require phantom power, but would still require an audio interface to a computer. These 2 mics MAY also benefit greatly by using a Cloudlifter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1177578-REG/cloud_microphones_cl_1_cloudlifter_mic_activator.html

Q: 6. If 2 people were sitting at a table roughly 3-4 feet apart and this mic were set in between them would it pick them both up clearly?

A: The microphone may pick up some speech from both speakers if they are sitting side by side in front of the mic. However, as it is a cardioid mic (not omni), you may not get satisfactory results in terms of intelligibility with two speakers sitting opposite each other. We would recommend you use 2 of these mics, one for each speaker.

Q: 7. What is the diameter of bottom part of shock mount? In other words, what size hole should I drill?

A: Per the instructions booklet for the shock mount, 1. Drill a 44mm (1-3/4 in.) hole in desired mounting surface. 2. Mark and drill starter holes for screws, using shock mount as a template. We have the shock mount installed in a podium now, so I can't physically verify this dimension, but my memory is the instructions have this correct.

Q: 8. Does this fit into the Shure A412B ACC Base for Microflex Desktop Gooseneck ?

A: Yes, the Shure MX418SS 18" Super-Cardioid Gooseneck Microphone with Switch will fit into the Shure A412B ACC Base for Microflex Desktop Gooseneck.

Q: 9. Is the base threaded?

A: It is and will attach to any standard mic stand.

Q: 10. On/off switch?

A: There is not an on/off switch. It would need to either be unplugged or, preferably, muted (or turned all the way down) at the soundboard, for it to not be on. Also, this requires phantom power to operate. But all of those things are very deliberate and appropriate. Generally speaking, no mic in this class of mics anywhere has an on/off switch. Why? Because this mic is much more powerful and sensitive than a standard hand-held mic. And it is designed for picking up singers or instruments that are just out of reach to the mic anyways.. .and the act of a person just touching the mic, in a higher volume application, will easily cause a thumping sound noticeable to the audience. Again, rightly so. This is NOT suppose to have a person's mouth just a an inch or two away. That is not what this mic is for. It is for (a) recording a group of voices/instruments that are a few feet away, not inches away... so it picks up sounds that are further away than a hand held vocal mic will so. To do that, it is much more sensitive and shouldn't be touched during operation. If you have to move it during a performance, then the sound person should mute it at the soundboard during the move, your you'll hear lots of popping and cracking noises. That all being said, this is all the way it is suppose to work... if any of these things were not true, the mic wouldn't be able to accomplish its main missions very well. It does what it was designed to do VERY well at a GREAT price for the excellent quality of mic this is. i've used several of these for years and have been very happy with them.

[Phantom Power] We have sides open to outside with tradewinds. This gets the capsule close to the speaker so better gain before feedback

[End Address] When you're dealing with non-public speakers standing before the microphone, a simple control to maintain proper placement of the mic's pickup pattern is so valuable and this simply designed gooseneck manages the podium with ease, all while minimizing it's physical presence in the space. Plus... it's a Shure!!

[Phantom Power] It performes better than the original windscreen. It is well worth the money

[End Address] Works perfectly, the LED ring is very helpful for speakers to know when the mic is on or off.

[Mono] We have a terribly bright and reflective chapel sanctuary, along with a pulpit dangerously near (what I think) is an improperly angled FOH. After switching from a boundary mic (what was left by the previous 'engineer', also a Shure) to this one, 99% of my podium-narrator-speaker-headaches are vaporized. Even with choir monitors on full, I couldn't get this mic to feedback - cracked it up, wouldn't break. The only thing I have to worry about now is just how loud do I really want to make my presenter. I haven't side-by-side this with anything in its class, but what I want it to do and how well it does it, I don't see a need to.

[Mono] Using this on the podium at church. It replaces our previous podium gooseneck that after many years of use started to pick up too much sound on the stage area creating feedback issues. I was specifically wanting to try a mic with a super cardioid pattern. This mic is just a tiny bit longer than I wanted but all the other super cardioid mics I could find were too short. The mic works well and sounds great. Rejection of sounds from the side is very good. As expected from a super cardioid it does pick up a little sound from the rear but at a very low volume that does not create any issues for us. The shock mount flange works well and greatly reduces sound from physical interaction with the podium and footsteps in the area. I like that the windscreen is a snap-on. Many windscreens on our last gooseneck disappeared because they came off too easily.
Very happy with the mic and are expecting many years of reliable performance from it.

[Solid-State] We're using this mic in a wireless unit on a podium in our church. The sound quality is crisp, articulate and clean - it's the best mic we have.
