Built with eight SATA drive bays that can handle 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives and SSDs, the ThunderBay 8 delivers sustained data transfer speeds of up to 2586 MB/s and connects to your host Windows or Mac system using a Thunderbolt 3 port, while a second Thunderbolt 3 port can be used to daisy-chain up to six ThunderBay 8 enclosures, or power one 5K / 60 Hz display or two 4K 60 Hz displays. There is also a dedicated DisplayPort 1.2 port that supports a 4K / 60 Hz display. Thanks to the SoftRAID software RAID controller, which is sold separately, the ThunderBay 8 can be configured as RAID 0 for performance, or RAID 1 for 1:1 data redundancy. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is available.

SoftRAID works with macOS 10.12 or later and Windows 10 or later. Intel-based Macs require macOS 10.12 or later. M1 Macs require macOS 11.1 or 11.3 and later. SoftRAID is licensed per computer. The SoftRAID serial number will work with both Mac and Windows but can only be active on one computer at a time. Additional seats can be purchased. Additionally, Thunderbolt 2 Macs are supported using Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. The ThunderBay 8 may also be configured as bootable on Mac only.

The ThunderBay 8 makes it easy to keep large data sets organized for every project, thanks to its eight hot swappable drive bays. Whether you're using 2.5" or 3.5" HDDs and/or SSDs, the drives mount in alphabetically labeled trays for easy identification and are secured by a thumb screw. If you want the freedom to access an extensive collection of drives quickly, you can create a drive "bullpen" with additional separately-sold OWC drive trays.

With a locking front panel and security slot on the backside, the ThunderBay 8 is like an ironclad vault for your data. Plus, with front panel LEDs indicating the status of each drive, you'll know at a glance if your data is secure.

ThunderBay 8 isn't just about high-capacity, high-performance storage. It's about giving you all the options you need to work at your best. Attach a 5K Thunderbolt display or two 4K displays. Place a USB 3.1 device at the end of a daisy chain. With an extra Thunderbolt 3 port, you have the flexibility to add more devices to your workflow and master any task at hand.

[1x 92 mm Fan] Installation rapid, SoftRaid instructions were a bit fuzzy, but the help desk rapidly solved my question. With just one week of operation, everything is running as expected. Data transfers are very rapid.

[Black] Seems like excellent build quality, great enclosure, good drive mounts, etc. My biggest issue right now is with SoftRAID, the included RAID management software. Setup was easy. I purchased the empty Thunderbay so I could add my own drives. Budget was an issue, so I only created the RAID5 array with 3 drives, planning on expanding to a 4th. Then I discovered that it is impossible to add drives like that. You have to completely back up everything, format all drives, rebuild a new array, and move everything back on to do this. Total pain!! Wish I'd known that ahead of time. I would still buy the product, but I would have set it up with all 4 drives the first time.

[1x 92 mm Fan] After I purchased 2 Thunderbay 8 for my media server, I decided to gue the 4 bay version for my personal computer (All Macs) I used to have the hard drives in cradles, and I was getting corruption issues all the time. After moving to these enclosures I haven't experienced ANY issues with the drives. Did I tell you that the speed performance is unbeatable? From USB 3ish to Thunderbolt makes a BIG difference.

[Black] This is not the fanciest RAID enclosure out there. And that is exactly why I like it. Plus, it looks simple / elegant. This thing stores data with great reads / writes over Thunderbolt 2. This enclosure does exactly what it advertises and it works well out of the box. The software was easy to set up and the machine has been reliable. I am certain that I will eventually get another one. SoftRAID takes no noticeable processing power from your host machine. I am really happy with this solution.

[1x 92 mm Fan] I have been using this drive bay for over 2 months now set up as RAID 5 and it's performed quite well. It's fast enough for my needs (graphic design, front end web development, photography and vector illustration) and works well to archive files to once I am done working on my SSD. Keeps my SSD 'light' and I have more than enough storage for the type of work I do. I can rest easy knowing that the drive is expandable and can be daisy-chained if necessary. I would say that having this hooked up to the iMac makes it seem as if I'm still working w/ internal storage on my old mac pro, which is essentially where I pulled the drives from. I did have to do a bit of setup to get the RAID going (copy drives, wipe drives, reformat and then configure into RAID 5, then copy data back over.) Wasn't real difficult though... just took a little time.
