Tilta 4x4" Lightweight Matte Box For Filmmaking

Tilta 4x4" Lightweight Matte Box For Filmmaking
  • Product Code: eq9761
  • Availability: In Stock

$1,350.00 $1,701.00

The Tilta 4x4" Lightweight Matte Box easily mounts onto 15mm rods via its rod adapter. It features two 4x4" filter holders. The lightweight construction adds very little weight to your system, and the swing-away design moves the matte box out of the way during lens changes, without having to remove the matte box from the rods.

The back of the matte box features a 114mm opening for lenses, and it comes with 80 and 95mm diameter lens adapters, and a fabric donut (Nun's Knickers), for use with smaller diameter lenses. The lens adapters and fabric donut are used to prevent light from leaking from behind the lens and reflecting off filters and flaring your image. The matte box features a removable top flag (eyebrow) that attaches to a hinge so you can precisely set the flag at the edge of your frame to block light sources from flaring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I want to make sure I’m understanding this correctly. The matte box comes with various adapters that screw into the thread on your lens (not the outer diameter). You then clamp the matte box onto the now attached threaded adapter. Is that correct?

A: That is correct. This comes with the following adapter for connecting: 67mm Adapter Ring 72mm Adapter Ring 77mm Adapter Ring 82mm Adapter Ring 15mm Single Rod Clamp

Q: 2. Does this support 150mm x 100mm filters?

A: Unfortunately it doesn't. You would need a bigger matte box to fit a 150mm x 100mm filter.

Q: 3. Is it possible to add flags in addition to the eyebrow?

A: Unfortunately Tilta is not listing that capability at this moment.

Q: 4. Does this work with Meike 16mm T2.2 lens? Also the top flag is included in the package ? Thanks

A: Yes it will. This comes with a 77mm filter adapter to connect to that lens and the top flag is included.

Q: 5. my filter thread for my Panasonic HH025 LUMIX G Lens, 25mm, F1.7 ASPH is 46mm, do you think it would work with the matte box?

A: You will need a 46mm to 67/72/77/82mm step-up ring to make your lens compatible with this matte box.

Q: 6. If I wanted to buy cover caps for these adapter rings so I can leave them on the lenses, what size would I look for? I see 85mm is the largest size to fit through matte box, but does that mean I’d look for 85mm cover caps or...? Thanks

A: You would need 85mm.

Q: 7. Should I buy something else to fit it to the cage ?

A: There are many alternative matte boxes but the Tiltaing Mini Matte Box is a very portable matte box option that does not interfere with camera cages.

Q: 8. If I use a 77mm VND, do I have to rotate the filter to adjust stops or does does the included 77mm adapter rotate as well? I figure it'd be easier to rotate the adapter with the little nob it has.

A: This is not designed to work with a Variable ND filter.

Q: 9. All of my lenses are 67mm diameter. So if I use the 67mm adapter that comes with this to attach the matte box will I still be able to use my 67mm circular filters that I bought like my VND?

A: Yes, you will be able to. Just put the filter on the lens, and then the matte box over it.

Q: 10. Can this clamp onto a lens without the threaded adapters if the lens has the correct outer diameter? What outer diameter would make this possible?

A: According to the manufacturer, the Tiltaing Mini Matte Box (B&H# TIMBT15) has an approximate opening size of 87mm: https://bit.ly/3KErKFF However, that is just an opening and not a clamp. As such, my answer to your question is no, you need to use a threaded adapter. Adapters for lenses with these sizes of front filter threads are included with the kit: 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm.

[3.005 lb] I was taking a look at which MB to buy after renting time and again and almost went with the bright tangerine, but for what I was doing didn't require the weight saving and extra expense. This does feel really well made and the 'free' / included mounting options are just the icing on the cake. In the attached picture I have the ARRI Rota Pola, followed by a straight Polarizer to create a VND and a Promist in front. Would highly recommend buying this piece of kit.

[Yes] If you're looking for a good matte box do yourself a favor and don't buy a $ knock off of a bigger matte box, I did that years ago and never used it because it was a piece of junk. This matte box is ruggedly built, it's not a knock off, it's a well designed matte box with minimal features that work perfectly, and are suitable for most camera operators. I like to run a small rig, I'm not looking for a behemoth matte box to make my camera look bigger, I just needed something functional, that is well built and can be used day in and day out. This checks off all the boxes. The size is perfect for using lenses with 100mm or less front diameter. Which are all the lenses I own. The included elastic nun's knickers in addition to the different clamp on adapter sizes is great. Everything that should be metal is metal, it's lightweight, sturdy and overall everything most operators need. Something to keep in mind is that it comes with a top flag, and there is no way to attach side flags or a bottom flag, I rarely use flags, so for me it wasn't an issue, and If I have a job that demands that kind of control it will be in the budget to rent a more feature rich matte box. Also the hood itself is made of plastic that is relatively flimsy, still rugged, just bendy. If you're the kind of operator who likes to grab hold of the matte box while shooting you might consider the carbon fiber version. I'm an owner operator and I need rugged, lightweight, professional equipment that delivers job after job.

[1x Top Flag] After looking at a few options I ended up getting this Matte box for 2 major reasons.
1. It has a 15mm LW rod attachment that helps support the lens and gives you comfort that your not pulling on your lens mount on the camera.
2. It has different quickly changeable lens clamps. You just slide it on and twist the clamp so if your not in to using the rods setup you can just quickly put it on.
The 3 stages are nice if you want to use a pola, ND and a grad. Its light and pretty inexpensive compared to a lot of the others in its class.
Works well and is easy to travel with.

[Yes] I have had several matte boxes before, most lately from Cavision in Canada and this is the best I've owned. Machining is very high quality and the design is great. Filter holders are metal, the swing away is slop-free. Everything I've bought of Tilta is high quality.

[Rod Ports] I bought the Redrock Micro Matte box when it was in the Deal Zone and was really excited. It came, I set it up and it had some glaring issues. For one, it was clunky and too big. But most of all, the design didn't allow me to have great positioning of the center of the box with the lens/camera. So i returned that and bought this. It was cheaper (than the regular price) but I saw that in the design, it seemed like it had greater flexibility in regards to the positioning of everything. I assumed correctly. It's awesome. Every piece of it I actually love. Much smaller and lighter but still has a huge opening for big cine lenses. Plus, it uses 4x4 filters rather than the bigger filters the RR used. I love it. One of my favorite buys in recent history.

[1x Top Flag] I haven't tried this yet, so if anything show up bad I will add to this review. I have gone over all the parts and functions of this matte box and I'm not sure how it could be made better. Perfecto grande.

There does seem to be a small discrepancy in B&H's description however. The included reducer rings are 80mm, 95mm and a fabric donut ring for use with the included knicker. The native size with out reducers is 114mm.

[1x Top Flag] Bought the matte box three years ago and it still excels everyday I use it. Compact enough to fit in a backpack, lightweight and really solid build, and the price is perfect.

[Yes] Great mattebox. It is a bit limited since it isn't compatible with side flags (ears) but most of the time all I need is the eyebrow anyways. Other than that this guys is awesome. Some might shy away because it only holds 4x4 filters, but you really don't need anything bigger than that unless you rock anamorphics. And if you can afford anamorphics then you can afford to rent out top level matteboxes. I love this mattebox, no complaints! Honestly I've become a big fan of Tilta over the years. For a Chinese company, they don't live up to the cheap Chinese stigma. Their products are at a very competitive price and they've always been well made and good investments.
