The camera natively features an FZ mount and includes a PL-mount adapter.

Out of the box, the F5 records 2K and HD up to 59.94p in XAVC. With the latest firmware updates installed, it will be able to record 4K raw from 1p to 60p and 2K raw from 1p to 240p to an AXS-R5 recorder, as well as 1080p 4:2:2 from 1 to 180 fps internally in XAVC. It will also be able to record SStP SR at 4:4:4 internally when you select RGB mode at 440 Mb/s instead of YUV 4:2:2. All raw recording is in 16-bit.

In addition to the AXS-R5 recorder, a digital interface on the F5 allows for a variety of optional viewfinders. DVF-EL100 is a 0.7" OLED viewfinder with 1280 x 720 resolution. DVF-L350 is a 3.5" LCD viewfinder with 960 x 540 resolution, and the eyepiece flips up for direct monitoring. DVF-L700 is a 7" LCD viewfinder with 1920 x 1080 resolution for monitoring Full HD pixel-for-pixel. Other modular components include the optional Sony shoulder rig, which features industry-standard rosettes on both sides for quick and easy attachment of third-party hand grips and other accessories.

The optional AXS-R5 recorder is designed to dock on the rear of the PMW-F5 and enables 4K and 2K resolution video recording in 16-bit raw. The AXS-R5 also facilitates high-speed frame rates of up to 120 fps in 2K raw and simultaneous raw + onboard SxS recording. The recorder uses Sony's newly developed AXSM memory cards, which are compatible with an optional USB 3.0 reader (AXS-CR1). Raw files can be screened using Sony's free raw Viewer software. (AXS-R5 is sold separately.)

The F5 is designed to accommodate a wide range of lenses. With the PL-mount adaptor, you can take advantage of acclaimed cine optics from Angenieux, Canon, Carl Zeiss, Cooke, FUJIFILM, Leica, and more. Slip off the supplied PL-mount adaptor to reveal the native FZ-mount with an 18mm flange focal distance. The FZ-mount provides an interface for native FZ lenses like Sony's SCL-Z18X140 auto focus servo zoom lens or a range of adaptors for still lenses, including Canon EF, Canon FD, Nikon F, Leica M, and more.

The ability to render a range of exposure values from deepest shadows to brightest highlights is a crucial test of any digital camera. The F5 is capable of an impressive 14 stops of exposure latitude, low-light sensitivity, and low noise in the blacks. The digital sensor's dynamic range approaches that of traditional motion picture film.

The F5 supports Sony's BP-FL75 battery pack, which uses Olivine Lithium Iron Phosphate instead of conventional Lithium Ion cathodes. The result is a substantial increase in charge-discharge cycles, compared to previous Sony batteries. The Olivine battery works with Sony's BC-L90 quick charger. The camera is also compatible with Sony's BP-GL95A, GL65A, L80S, and L60S batteries, which use the BC-L70 and L160 chargers.

Designed with significant input from cinematographers, the F5 features an intuitive interface for a range of controls. Instead of diving through menus, you get direct, one-touch access to key shooting parameters including frame rate, shutter speed, color temperature, ISO sensitivity, and gamma. Assignable buttons mean that your favorite adjustments are always at your fingertips.

The F5 offers numerous connections to suit your workflow, including four HD-SDI jacks, HDMI, USB, DC-in connection, a removable XLR audio module, and a removable timecode/genlock module. The XLR inputs accept balanced analog signals, provide 48V phantom power, and will accept four channels of AES/EBU digital audio with an expected firmware upgrade.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I mount a Canon HDGC KH 19x6.7KAS SY14 19x lens on this camera? If so what mounting adapter would I need?

A: We are having a hard time locating the exact model of lens you listed, however lenses from Canon with similar nomenclature are 1/2 B4. You would need at least a 2/3 B4 with an adapter on this camera, it may not be possible with the lens you have I'm afraid. Feel free to email us directly at provideo@bhphoto.com for additional assistance.

Q: 2. Is there a super 35 crop mode like in the FX9 which allows us to use non-Full Frame lenses such as the 18-110?

A: There is, but it only works in HD mode. It will not do S35 crop in 4K.

Q: 3. I'm a bit confused by the description. Does the F5 record 4k raw internally or not? One description says it does, another description and the specs say it does not.

A: This package includes the firmware upgrade that activates internal 4K/QFHD Recording and Playback using the XAVC 4K/QFHD format. That is not a RAW format I'm afraid. For RAW recording you would have to add the Sony AXS-R5 Recorder as well.

Q: 4. Can the f5 record X OCN with AXS r7?

A: no it can not

Q: 5. Will this allow a Sony V-Mount Charger I have to charge generic Gold Mount batteries? I know some chargers have additional contacts for temperature sensors while charging. Does it pass those as well?

A: We must recommend that you use an appropriate charger. There is a strong risk of damage to your batteries if you do not.

Q: 6. In Sony site the dimensions of sony f5 without protrusion are 130mm X125mm X191mm(WxHxD),but in B&H site it is mentioned as 18.9cm X15.1 cm X21cm,there is much more increase in b$h site,!!!,what is the exact dimensions-dr asok

A: For the all the precise dimensions of the F5, please see page 126 of the manual. http://bit.ly/2lLfX0V

Q: 7. What is the max load of the D-tap ports?

A: The information we have says that Anton Bauer Gold Mounts (and by extension their P-Taps) will have a maximum current drew of between 7 & 10 amps

Q: 8. The price includes pmw f5 and A7S ii? Seriously? That is, 2 x 4K cams! They are brand new? Thx.

A: Yes they are, all items in this bundle are new. This is a fantastic deal.

Q: 9. Does this require any additional cables, like some of the other V-Mount to Gold mount adapters out there, or does the power pass right through the main unit? Just trying to figure out if I need cable accessories... thanks!

A: needs no additional cables

Q: 10. does this camera work with anamorphic 1.3x lenses at full sensor or how would that work for desqueeze?

A: The Sony PMW-F5 CineAlta Digital Cinema Camera with Viewfinder and Shoulder Mount Kit (Refurbished) can shoot with Anamorphic 1.3x lense, and the camera should support a 1.3x desqueeze output so long as it has been updated with the latest firmware.

[V-Mount] This plate works very well. it's like it's not even there. This is my second try. The first was an off name brand and broke before the first job.

[Super35 CMOS] Installing this cable protector has meant I no longer worry about the possibility of cable snapping the connector off whilst attached to the camera. Safe and sound now both in the case and on set.

[11 lb] Most people will find this useful for a RED Epic or dragon, since most of those are set up with V mount batteries. It's cool to when using the f5 or f55 because you can get away from using the proprietary Sony battery system. Being a first Ac and Steadicam operator, I find that Gold mount batteries such as the anton/bauer line lock in better. To each their own, but here are some of the benefits I found: You pick up some extra DTaP ports to plug in more accessories with this adapter, and it will also extend the battery out from the camera about an inch which can help to better balance the rig front to back.

[4.2 to 360°] Exactly what I expected and needed. Works perfect to translate V-mount to Gold-mount.

[14 Stops] I am using this without a top plate, which apparently you can use with or without. It fits perfect, is not excessive in size, and perfectly protects the cable without making it harder to remove!

[Yes] Let me just say I give this 4.5 stars. Pros There are many things I love about this camera and feel that in respect to image quality it is a large upgrade from SLR and in our case the FS100 which I still love for most applications. The F5's dynamic range truly gives the cinematic look that we are familiar with seeing on larger productions. I really love the codec options that this camera offers and find it is easy to adapt to a variety of manageable workflows that are not too burdening. I am really looking forward to some of the higher frame rate firmware updates that have been forecasted. Kit I have had this kit for just over a month now and do feel that it is a good camera kit and value. I do have problems with several of the items. 1. Shoulder Mount 2. Canon Lens Adapter 3. Viewfinder 1. The Shoulder Mount honestly feels a bit useless with this camera. Period. Do not buy it separately. 2. The Canon Lens Adapter does not on the mount properly and is very lacking in performance. 3. I wish I would have gone with the HD .3 more expensive viewfinder and gotten a separate OLED Monitor passing on the shoulder mount. I have a problem with the Canon adapter as it does not fit properly on the PL mount. The Canon adapter also does not stop down or open up in a fluid or reliable fashion.

[V-Mount] I use this on my Sony PMW-F5 to adapt my Anton Bauer G-mount Dionic 90 batteries. The adapter is sturdy and doesn't flex in the V-mount. I wish there was a bit more metal in its construction, however, but the trade-off would be additional weight, so I am satisfied. If you need more power output flexibility, I would suggest the Switronic JetPac.
