Featuring an aluminum frame with small built-in magnets, the 850nm Kolari Vision Infrared Magnetic Clip-In Filter Sony E-Mount 850nmfrom Kolari Vision Infrared Magnetic Clip-In Filter Sony E-Mount 850nmsecures magnetically to the camera mount, and your lens then mounts on top. The filter sits securely between the camera and lens. It's compatible with full frame Sony E-mount cameras.

Unlike the 590nm and 665nm versions of this Kolari filter, this 850nm version does not require a full spectrum modification to be made to your camera, but only as long as you use the camera mounted on a tripod and set long exposures. Otherwise, a full spectrum modification is required. That entails removing the camera's low-pass filter and replacing it with a clear filter. Once that's done, this 850nm filter will work as intended to block visible light up to 850nm from the light spectrum. (Kolari Vision can make the modification for you at a cost if you send in your camera to them.)

The filter material is glass. A small removal tool is included but not required. The compact tool looks like a guitar pick and is included just in case, as the filter can easily be removed by hand.

[Glass] It is a filter with the appropriate settings for use in both photos and videos, especially when the sunlight is not strong or the day is cloudy. Additionally, its internal use makes it convenient by eliminating the need to recalibrate a gimbal when removing or attaching it. It has a minimal impact on the white balance, which is very easy to correct. Highly convenient as with just one filter, I can use an infinite variety of lenses. 5

With these clip-in filters, I can attach ND filters and shoot video with both RF and adapted EF lenses with no issues. This 6 stop ND was perfect for shooting a music video outside in sunny Los Angeles, and the 1/8 Mist had just a hint of glow to highlights without killing the contrast. I own all three 1/8 mist (0-stop, 3-stop, and 6-stop), and I have one in my camera at all times. Looking to try the 1/4 mist at some point to compare. 5

[5.2 x 5.1 x 1"] This filter is easy to put in and easy to remove. The mounting mechanism works really well and the all metal construction is very durable. The filter itself is high quality and works very well. Kolari customer service is also fantastic. 5

[Aluminum] I'm not sure how long rear filters have been around, but this is absolutly groundbreaking for astrophotography, as well as other purpose filters ie: Polarizer, Neutral Density, B&W, etc. So much easier, and cheaper, than purchasing numerous front filters and the smudges and dust they attract, not to mention the space those velcro filter holders take up in your gear bag. I'd rather have room for another lens (or two). Simply cover your lens with a UV/protection filter. Lastly, these rear filters are simple and easy to change out. I'll personally just use one camera for astrophotography and will buy a rear Polarizer filter for one of my other cameras for daylight shooting. 5

[Dedicated] I decided on the 3-stop version because I was looking for a little help during sunny days and this has worked perfectly. The magnet slaps right on place and is easy to remove with anything that has a thin corner like a guitar pick or a credit card. No more ND filters dependent on diameter size! 5
