Featuring an aluminum frame with small built-in magnets, the Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror Filter for Canon RFfrom Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror Filter for Canon RFsecures magnetically to the camera lens mount, and your lens then mounts on top. The filter sits securely between the camera and lens. It's compatible with the Canon EOS R, R5, R6, and RP. Specifically for the Canon RP camera, a mag mount accessory is included. The Canon RP doesn't have the steel elements necessary to support the magnetic attachment of this filter. The mag mount has adhesive strips that provide a solution.

The filter is designed to normalize your camera when it has either a full spectrum or two-spectrum modification. In either case, it allows light to pass normally to the sensor, so you can shoot normal photos.

The filter can only be used with a modified camera. A spectrum-modified camera is one in which the camera's native low-pass filter was removed in order to support certain IR filters for IR photography. If you have such a camera, this hot mirror filter will let you take normal photos without having to make any changes to the spectrum modification. The filter blocks IR light and some UV light, the same way the native low-pass filter that was removed from the camera during modification would have. The filter requires no exposure compensation.

The filter material is glass. A small removal tool is included but not required. The compact tool looks like a guitar pick and is included just in case, as the filter can easily be removed by hand. This clip-in filter can also be used in combination with the optional Kolari Canon RF to EF Drop-In Filter Adapter, which secures to the camera and holds a drop-in filter. When the clip-in filter is used together with the drop-in filter adapter, you can use two filters at the same time.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work with the Canon R5c?

A: Yes, the Kolari Vision Magnetic Clip-In ND Filter for Canon RF-Mount Cameras (3-Stop) is compatible with the Canon EOS R5 C Mirrorless Cinema Camera. The Kolari Vision Mag Mount for Magnetic Clip-in Filter (Canon EOS R5, R6, R6ii, R3, R) would be recommended for this, BH #KOMMPCR563 (https://bhpho.to/3u9AAb3). Though the filters will work in the R5C without it, the mag mount is highly recommended for best functionality, additional strength, and protecting the baseplate from scratches.

Q: 2. Will this work with the Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R?

A: Yes, the Kolari Vision Clear Drop-In Filter for Kolari/Canon EF-EOS R Drop-In Adapter is compatible with the EF-EOS R Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter.

Q: 3. Is this clip in filter 12nm or 7nm?

A: The only information Kolari Visions lists on the Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut H-Alpha Pass Magnetic Clip-in Filter for Canon RF-Mount Cameras is, https://bit.ly/3GUpzNi .

Q: 4. would it achieve any result on a normal camera? (not full spectrum)

A: A full spectrum modification is required to be made to your camera. This entails manually removing the camera's low-pass filter and replacing it with a clear filter. Once that's done, this filter will work as intended. (Kolari Vision can make the modification for you at a cost if you send in your camera to them.) It will not work without removing the low pass filter.

Q: 5. Why is this not available in filter size 46mm when all other Kolari Vision lens filters are?

A: Kolari Vision does not list the reason, but checking the Kolari Vision IR Chrome Lens Filter does not come in 46mm size. You can get a larger size and use a step up ring. Like this filter, https://bhpho.to/3HlbjMQ and one of these step up rings, https://bhpho.to/3OdE1Uu.

Q: 6. Is this the Pro 2 version? The picture shows Pro 2, but the description doesn't. THanks

A: Yes. The Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror Magnetic Clip-in Filter for Sony E-Mount Full-Frame Cameras is the newer Pro 2 version.

Q: 7. does this filter help in astrophotography if the camera is not modified?

A: The Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut H-Alpha Pass Magnetic Clip-in Filter is not recommended for use in an unmodified camera.

Q: 8. Will this work with the Nikon Z8? Full spectrum modified.

A: The Kolari Vision KV-FL1 Multispectral Flash with IR and UV Flash Filters works with most cameras that have a standard hotshoe like the Z8.

Q: 9. Is this compatible with a Fuji X-series camera? Will TTL work? If not which brands is it compatible with?

A: Yes, the Kolari Vision KV-FL1 Multispectral Flash with IR and UV Flash Filters is compatible with Fuji X-series cameras because the Fuji hot shoe is standard. This flash unit's TTL is not compatible with Fuji. However, TTL is available for Nikon and Canon cameras with the standard shoes only.

Q: 10. Is this only for FF RF mount camera bodies?

A: The Kolari Vision Light Pollution Magnetic Clip-In Filter for Canon RF-Mount Cameras is compatible with APS-C mount RF cameras as well but it requires a mag mount from Kolari Vision specifically for the R7 and R10. This version will work with the R3, R5, R6, R, and also the RP with the included mag mount specifically for the RP.

[0.3 lb] This filter has greatly enhanced my photos of the night sky. I use a Canon EOS 6D Mark II that has a full spectrum modification and this filter helps reduce the red spectrum which makes the picture look more natural.

[IR/UV Control] I have only tested this filter on my Lifepixel-modified Canon R6 (v1), but I like it already. It produces some really interesting color combinations that my other Lifepixel IR filters do not. Samples below are with custom white balance in-camera.

[IR/UV Control] I've been using the Kolari Vision IR Chrome Lens Filter on my IR full spectrum modified Sony a7iii with the 24mm G-Master lens. In order to achieve the vibrant red foliage colors with realistic blue skies and other colors, it is critical to have the correct custom white balance. At least with the Sony this required some experimentation as the usual gray card setting makes green foliage more orange than red (see photo), and this is very hard to correct in Lightroom. With my Sony, getting vibrant red foliage pushed the hues of other colors off a bit. Your experience may differ as I'm betting it's a function of the color algorithms in the specific camera being used. I did find that desaturating all color channels except blue can be any easy way to get b&w IR images with nice blue skies (see photo). Like all filters, plan to play with it a while to see how it affects your images under various circumstances.

[IR/UV Control] Shoot aerochrome with you converted full spectrum digital camera. Works like a charm, just set your white balance and trees turn red but keeps the sky blue. No need to sit in front of your computer to swap channels.
Ensure that your lenses do not create hotspots. Some lenses can create spots in the centre of images.

[Aluminum] Filter really makes a bold difference in astro imaging. Noting that the lens sun hood doesn't fit over the knurled edge of the filter. I can live with it since a sun hood is rarely needed at night... if I were to use this filter for artistic reasons during the day I might have another thought

[4.2 x 1 x 1"] I recently ordered this to have more options when shooting with a full-spectrum converted camera. It's great to be able to do false colour infrared without needing to use channel mixing in post production. It also opens up a wider range of treatments in the resulting files. I think it's my new favourite IR look.

[IR/UV Control] OK if you are not sure if you will use it don't buy it. But if you have a full spectrum camera, this is one of your filters in your IR, UV filter set. Color IR is not for every one but it can be a blast if you find a way to understand what this filter can do for you.
