Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Presumably, when sliding old paper mounted slides into the machine, over time it is going to get dusty inside. Is there a way to open it and clean it or is that a chancy procedure (like trying to clean the dust off a sensor of an SLR camera)? What is recommended for cleaning?

A: Opening the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i Ai Film Scanner will void an warranty, One suggest was canned air. But I would be very careful as that can release Freon. Or you can try a blower brush.

Q: 2. Does it work with Mac High Sierra (OS 10.13.4)?

A: If your Mac is an Intel Based CPU it should work but if it is a PowerPC no.

Q: 3. I want to buy one but don't know which model to get on so, what's the difference between the 8100, 8200i SE and the 8200i Ai? Just software bundles they come with?

A: The software is only bad in that it is complex. There are automatic settings that work well. Overall after doing over 100 scans I like the software and the scanner. The 8200 models come with the infrared scratch and dust detection and it works well and saves a lot of time with a healing brush. I like that the software will allow you to get a high res high density scan. The software is not plug and play but is powerful. I think the bundle with the full version of the software was well worth the price but the learning curve was big but pays off in the end. Silverfast has videos that explain the process and every tool. I have had several slide scanners and this is fast on low res scans but if you want to get the best of your old negatives you will do higher res scans and they take 20-30 sec. If you want low res copies of your slides and negatives then either look to the lower end models or send the stuff to a vendor that will do it for you. The lower end stuff is just as slow. If you don't care about resolution of the final jpg or tif and you will only look at them on your computer screen or small frames, send them out and forget the dyi of slide scanning. It's very time consuming but for decent res, it's worth it.

Q: 4. Does the film holder keep the film perfectly flat when scanning? Does it do this even if only scanning a single image?

A: The film holder holds the strip by the edges and snaps closed, but does not have a mechanism to stretch or otherwise flatten film that is curled. The small aperture of the scanning sensor compensates for normal curvature, but if your negative is severely curled you may not get good results.

Q: 5. Will the software load well and play well on a Mac Air laptop running OS X 10.9.5?

A: I needed to contact the software company to be able to load it from the internet because I didnt have a drive in the computer I needed it on. Once I figured that out it was fine.

Q: 6. does it work with apple OS 10.10.1 ??

A: Yes. I used it yesterday to scan 35 mm slides. I have an iMac with 10.10.1 and Silverfast 8.2.0r2.

Q: 7. no support for 120 film?

A: True, This Device does not scan 120mm film. Does 35mm film and slides, (110 if you are creative). Time consuming to do, but it pays for it's self when you consider the cost of having it done by some else.

Q: 8. So if one were to use this to copy a 35mm slide (36x24mm) how many pixels would be contained in the resulting file? jpeg and raw

A: The scanner's highest scanning resolution is 7200dpi, and based on some slides I scanned recently that yields an image that is approximately 9300 x 6300, give or take a hundred or two pixels on each side. So just under a 60 megapixel image. The file format you save the image as does not affect the amount of pixels. TIFF is the uncompressed format you can scan. The scanner lets you scan at smaller resolutions as well, which yields smaller and more manageable file sizes.

Q: 9. Is this scanner working with windows 10 fall?

A: Yes, it definitely works with Windows 10. I had no problems, scanned in almost a thousand pictures and no hiccups. Great scanner!

Q: 10. Do you have to use Silverfast to do scanning or can you use something like Photoshop Elements or Photoshop (full)?

A: You can also purchase VueScan. However, SilverFast doesn't have to be difficult to use. The automatic image processing really works well and if you follow a few basic steps, it's pretty easy to use. The editing power is also there if you want to do serious editing. [Download] Like many older photo guys, I have a 35mm slide collection with some worthy of digitizing. A number of years ago, I managed access to a Nikon CoolScan that was being used to convert pathology slide collections. This was for me, the gold standard. I began the process only to discover that it took 10-15 minutes to scan a slide and resulted in an image of 80mB. This was not an enticing process and the project went no further.I looked at Wolverine converters and actually borrowed one. The results were terrible, but it only took 3 seconds to get them. I discovered that the converter takes a time exposure of the slide rather than scans it. The result was very high contrast, washed out detail and terrible color. Further research led me to the Plustek scanner and VueScan. I took the plunge, ordered one from B&H and was in business 4 days later. It comes with Silverfast, a slow and cumbersome software. In several reviews that I had previously read, VueScan was suggested as a great alternative. After looking at the free trial, I paid for the full version. The products are great you may have to fiddle with the light balance to get the proper correction. A scan takes 5-10 seconds. I could take more time to thoroughly rid the slides of dust if I cared more. I am very pleased at the workflow and the product. It approximates the CoolScan result for much less time and money.

[Download] I had a little trouble at the beginning and had to install the program from the website vs the disc that was included. Once I figured that out things worked well. There is a learning curve. I appreciate the ability to adjust the images individually.

[Download] Scanning ease with a touch of a button. Save time over a taditional scanner that handles negs. The compact size takes little desk space & it's portable enough to take along in it's own protective bag. Scatches & dust are no match for the included software. Quality scans are the result.

[Download] I bought the OpticFilm 8100 to digitize my old 35mm slides. It does an awesome job. I followed the WorkflowPilot in the SilverFast 8.0 (the software comes with the OpticFilm 8100) and using the highest available resolution (7200dpi) it took 4 minutes and 48 seconds to produce the best possible scan. The software is designed to take into consideration the color issues of older slides and will automatically try to correct with the Histogram option. 9 times out of ten this correction is spot on, but sometimes you need to tell the software to ignore. However, 10 times out of ten, I tell it to ignore the Gradation - it always tends to over-saturate the colors. There are other options like Selective Color Correction where you and adjust hue and saturation by themselves that are useful at times. Keep in mind that using the 7200 dpi you'll get a monster-sized file a 100 MB or larger, but that works if you're planning on printing. At the 1800 dpi it took 35 seconds and produced a 10 MB file which would be good for web. There is also a mid range of 3600 dpi that fits in the middle of both time to scan and file size, so you have 3 good options. I am VERY pleased with my purchase and will get good use from this device and included software.

[Download] I have been using a Nikon Coolscan V since 2004, but it recently developed a weird problem that is outside the scope of this review. Since Nikon stopped supporting its film scanners around 2016, I decided to get this unit as a replacement. Based on my first 10 scans, it appears to be doing nicely. Advice for people still using film scanners-consider picking one of these up before the market dries up.

[Download] I use Vue Scan instead of the Silverfast that came with it and it works very well.  Not superfast but fast enough.  I highly recommend this scanner.
