Color Laser Printer With Large Paper Tray

[30.5 lb] As a self-employed writer, editor, desktop publisher, and writing teacher, I need a B&W laser printer for printing large quantities of drafts, and I hate having to add paper to the tray. When my workhorse LaserJet 4050 finally became unusable, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a B&W laser printer with a large tray at a reasonable price. I went with the M501, even though it's overkill for the quantity I print, because a 550-sheet tray came standard. It's also super fast. I occasionally need to print 2-sided, and the auto-duplexing is fabulous — wish I'd gotten that years ago. The footprint is exactly the same as the 4050, and it's not even as tall. I love the printer, but I knocked a point off of performance for a couple minor annoyances -- every so often, the printer thinks it's out of paper when it's not (something the 4050 never, ever did), and I have to open and close the tray. I also find it harder to load paper. And when I use the auto-duplexing, pages sometimes push other pages out of the output tray. I finally figured out that a little plastic piece that flips up at the end of the output tray is (I guess) intended to keep the pages in the tray, but that piece is not identified in the drawings of the printer and not mentioned anywhere in the manual I downloaded (since, of course, nothing comes with a manual anymore). (There's at least one other part on the printer that is not identified anywhere, and even though I apparently don't need to do anything with it, it still drives me nuts not knowing what it is or does.)

[Laser] [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been using a laserjet printer from a different brand for 10 years now and I decided that it's time to upgrade. Compared to my old laser printer, this is a color laser printer. The old one is only for black and white. The set up and installation is pretty simple and fast. It has a colored 5 inch color touchscreen that enables the use to operate the printer easily. It can hold up to 250 sheets of paper on the tray and 50 sheets for the multi-purpose tray. It is fast and doesn't make a loud noise while printing. It prints up to 35 pages per minute in black and color. You can also print straight from your phone. You can connect to Wi-Fi for cable free connectivity and a USB 2.0 slot is availble as well in case a Wi-Fi connection is not available. My only complaint about it is that it is big, heavy and bulky. But it is not a deal breaker. Because it looks strong and sturdy. All in all I am very happy with my new printer!

[Color] [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is an advanced printer with loaded features. It has large touch screen that makes changing settings a breeze. It can print both sides of paper and has ADF when scanning bunch of paper documents. There is tray on the bottom and another tray that opens up to allow you to print on longer paper. I print mostly using AirPrint, it is so effortless to print with this printer. Once it is set up and connected it prints surprisingly fast. I am very happy with the print quality in both documents and color prints. What also surprised me is that my lights no longer flicker when printing. With my old laser printer, everytime I printed something the lights in the room flickered. I suspected it is due to large power draw of the printer. However this printer does not have this problem at all, which is fantastic. There were couple of hiccups when first setting up though. First the AirPrint did not work at first. This was fixed by doing printer firmware update and restarting. Once I updated I never had problem doing AirPrint. The other issue was when changing few settings it requires an admin pin. This PIN number is sitting on the toner tray that slides out. I spent maybe 10minutes trying to figure out what the pin was. The manual kind of mentions where it is, but the pin was not there, rather it was on a tray that slides out. It’s a small annoyance and was a one time issue, but wish it was better. Overall I am very happy with this printer, I hope it lasts a long time.

[256 MB (RAM)] This is a great printer for home personal use. It is exactly as described and quality is excellent. It does everything I need. And I was able to connect it, etc, to all my other devices by myself and it didn’t take long at all. The HP Printer Smart App was Extremely useful. I have always used only HP Printers & the very large ALL IN ONES. But I don’t use the large ones now, but I just have to say that my last HP ALL IN ONE lasted 15 years and it was used a lot!! 100 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️to HP!! I’m just having a very slight problem with my new HP ENVY Inspire e. When I go to print a notice comes up that says problem with paper; but it still prints, I notice the paper slides toward front of printer paper tray, and still have not been able to figure out why! So I have to keep pushing paper back into back of paper tray. I can’t figure out why it won’t stay in place. And I only use HP Paper. I highly recommend this printer!

[Print] This is my first large-format printer so I was looking for something that could make good full-color prints that wasn't crazy expensive. I was a little hesitant to go with a printer with only 4 colors since my other Epson printer is 6 but I printed a few movie posters to test things out and they looked great! One thing to note: the 100' Magic Siena paper I ordered with the printer is too heavy out of the box so I had to remove enough paper for the roll to be flush with the top edge of the paper stops. Then everything worked perfectly.

[13.5 x 6.7 x 5"] Brother makes a great Laser color printer, so you'd expect them to make great cartridges. AND they do!

[Color] All the features I expected in a color laser printer. It’s an excellent machine and I buy it again in a second.
