[4 x 3 x 1"] Most photographers use at least one diffusion filter for portraits, whether a professional whose clients need to look great, or the rest of us who want to flatter Granny at her 90th birthday celebration party. I have kids with iffy complexions in their adolescence and didn’t want to rely too heavily on Photoshop for the fix. For use on my Quattro DP2, this filter does a fine job of holding small details like eyelashes, yet blends blemishes well. (One caveat: a large blackhead or dark pimple may be accentuated, depending on circumstances, so a white diffusion filter or dab of concealer could be needed.) Since the eyes and lashes/eyebrows hold their detail portraits can be very flattering with this Tiffen product. It looks odd by itself as it appears to be glass with a pattern of little black marks all over it, where I more or less expected some type of black screen or grid. Not being an optical engineer and as well as the filter works, I chalk it up to FM. Also, I prefer to use Tiffen products in general as they have always be good quality, competitively priced, and made in the good ol’ U. S. of A.; what’s not to like?

[Silver] There's a reason all kinds of professional photographers use Elinchrom modifiers on other brands of lights. The Octa creates a beautiful wrap and the 135 is the perfect size for studio and location (with sandbags of course).

[-4 to +18 EV] The Pentax Monochrome, following Leica's lead into digital black and white photography, opens the doors for affordable, high quality rebirth of B&W images for hobbyists and professional photographers alike. As a young hobbyist I will never forget watching my first image emerge in the development pan in the dimly red light room. A second AHA moment was my first view of B&W negatives taken with my first Leica rangefinder camera and lens. I now have a third, and possibly most important event, that occurred when I reviewed my first images using the Pentax monochrome camera -- finely nuanced B&W pictures that virtually jumped off from the view screen. My first thought was that I had been shortsighted and tight-fisted by my initial response to the high price of the Leica Monochrome cameras. My second thought was that there now exists a clear, challenging future for hobbyists and professional photographers. The question most photographers now have to answer for themselves is how best to capture their images. There is a bright future awaiting B&W photography. The Pentax monochrome is an incredible photographic instrument at an unbelievably low price. Leica opened the door to 35mm photography and now has opened the door to digital B&W photography. The Pentax DSLR is the first to follow Leica and has done so with its SOA improvements to DSLR cameras. It will not take long for all the usual copycats to compete in this new and exciting dimension of photography.
