It will adjust open to around 4.4 inches and when you tighten down the adjustment bolt it stays tight and holds your phone very well. I use mine to have my phone with me while outside and it gets knocked over/falls over but the phone does not come out of the holder. The unit folds flat for easy packing into my backpack also. I really like this item.
