[Closed-Back] I've never spent so much money on headphones, especially as I purchased with the top of the range Sony portable DAC (NW-WM1Z), and i did so because i wanted to know for myself if the reviews are real. I'm no audiophile, but i have been blown away time and time again, literally...laugh out loud experiences are continual. I have nearly 5000 albums and i'm slowly working through them like i'm hearing them for the first time. To Sony - thank you so much for investing in the R&D and team to allow them to create such an array of products that for those of us willing to make the financial sacrifices can enjoy. I've never liked a product so much, and i'll continue to be an ardent follow of all future Sony hi-res audio equipment, this entire experience for me was unique and mind blowing and i just can't wait to go to bed every night to escape into my music. I'm obsessed with listening to anything and everything on these headphones. And every day i'm amazed...its a gift that keeps on giving. Just WOW. To the Z1R product team - thank you sooooo much, i'm so, so grateful to enjoy my music with these!!

[1.3 lb] I used to wear my Sony Pro Headphones all the time... but these are so much more comfortable and easier to work with while editing in my home studio.

[Open-Back] I have now tried 4 different headphones: Sony MDR-7506, Beyer DT990, Sennheiser HD650, Shure SRH1840. My intent was to find headphones that I could mix with, sounded suitably neutral, and have a similar response to my Yamaha HS7s, and to my HiFi which I use as an audio reference (Naim 42/110, into Rogers Studio One speakers..) Here are my conclusions/comments 1. Sony 7506: great for tracking; decent response, good isolation(I have two pairs of these..) 2. Beyer DT990: too much bass plus a sibilant top end, and 'scooped' mids. I did not like the sound of these. Returned. 3. Senn HD650: better than the Beyers but still an over-emphasized bottom end. Nice for general listening through a good headphone amp, but not good for mixing. Returned. 4. Shure SRH1840: best of the bunch, and sound very similar to the HS7s in my home studio. Bass is tight and responsive, and seems faithful to the intent of the recording. Also sound pretty close to my 'reference' hi-fi system. These are keepers. I wish that they were made in the USA.. !

[39 Hz to 36 kHz] As an audiophile and someone who owns a large range of headphones, I have to say the MDR-MV1 Open-Back is a fantastic headphone. Period. However, make no mistake, this is a Sony headphone with a Sony Sound. Slightly V shaped but don't let that turn you off. I really do mean slightly. It has a little bass lift but nothing that interferes with the mid's or treble. This is one of the most balanced headphones in my collection. Everything has it's place and comes shining through. Bass - So well balanced. Actually, to these ears darn near perfect. So well balanced and not muddy at all. Mids - Everything where it should be. The vocals sit dead center (if mixed that way) and again, has it's own place in the soundstage. Treble - Nothing spiky in the sound at all. Weight - I forget I am wearing them. They are so light, when I picked-up the box I was really surprised at the weight. For a second I thought they forgot to put the headphones in. No joke. Soundstage - Nothing that is going to stop the planet but well staged and defined. My Audeze has a larger one but those headphones were twice the price. Overall, very pleased. Does not sound crowed at all. Worth it: Up to you. For me, yes. I am willing to bet Sony has a hit on their hands. I love these headphones. They have been plugged into my DAC/AMP since I got them.

[Gold] I recently noticed my Sony MDR ZX-100's which have served me quite well over the years, were starting show signs of wear on the ear cups. That's when I decided it was time for new headphones. Shopping B&H online,I spotted the Sony MDR-ZX110 Headphones. Boy,did I ever make the right choice! They are as comfortable as the old ones & the sound is crisp & clear with a warm, rich bass response you might expect from higher priced models. These are great headphones for the money. I certainly recommend them.
